Some things are urgent; some things are important; very few things are both urgent and important.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

The vast majority of important things are not urgent and so they can be postponed. And unfortunately, on a regular basis, that's exactly what most people do.

Procrastination is a lot like using your dentist's drill on your own teeth...

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

If you have some skill at it, and you use it properly, then procrastination can be a very good tool and you can end up with a big healthy smile on your face.

If you use it wrong, as most people do, then you can cause yourself pained expression and a rotten taste in your mouth.

Related to this... You can put procrastination on a reduced-negative-thinking diet.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

"A person with clear purpose will make progress even on the roughest road. A person with no purpose will make no progress even on the smoothest road."

Thomas Carlyle, Scottish philosopher (1795-1881)

***

When I think about this I wonder if it would be better said - A person with clear purpose makes progress despite the roughness of the road.

Then I wonder if it should be - A person with clear purpose will make progress because of the roughness of the road.

And...

The smoother the road the less likely you will reach your long-term destination.

The smoother the road the less likely you will know or achieve your long-term purpose.

And finally...friends...

Let's not stumble along purposeless roads...let's construct better paths.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Part of it is being curious. Part of it is seeking to understand. Part of it is 'Planning Your Work'.

Much of it is being present and listening.

And you can call it Communication.

Discipline yourself if you wish to persuade others.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Do what I say not what I do does not cut it. Probably, most of us can remember incidents when we were children and adults in positions of authority gave us instructions that they themselves did not follow. To the extent that happened, we learned to resist instructions that came to us as do what I say not what I do. As we gained experience and confidence our resistance to these inconsistent demands increased. Now, we have much trouble following instructions from people who do not lead by example. And, we distrust those who talk the talk but don’t walk the walk.
