Thought Tweet #834

by Rick Baker
On Sep 26, 2013

Thought Tweet #834 When you display worry people get nervous. (Wow - Who'd have seen that coming!)

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Let's face it...some of us are natural-born worriers. When worry hits us we would do better if it wasn't for that body-language stuff that causes us to wear our worry on our faces...furrowed brows and similar give-aways.

Thought Tweet #833.5

Thought Tweet #833.5 You cannot drive people when you work them in a fog.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Nor can you expect people in a fog to generate much internal drive.

Nor will people in a fog drive one another around toward specific destinations.

People get nervous when they are being driven in a fog.

People get nervous when they are driving in a fog...well...at least the ones that notice the fog get nervous.

Thought Tweet #833 When you display anger people get defensive. (Wow -Who'd have seen that coming!)

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Some say we should not thwart the natural energy captured in the form of anger.

Perhaps, a bit of anger in the workplace is OK. As long as you're OK with a bit of defensiveness.

Thought Tweet #832.5 Converting challenge into change...isn't that the essence of the leader's role?

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Leaders see challenging situations....political, technological, interpersonal, economic, etc.

Leaders envision and desire change.

Leaders inspire other people to convert challenge into change.

Thought Tweet #832 Productive work gets done in that sweet spot between boredom and anxiety.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

When people are anxious they perform poorly.

When people are bored they perform poorly.

We don't want our people to be either bored or anxious.

Fortunately, there are plenty of options between those 2 extremes.

Thought Tweet #831.5

Thought Tweet #831.5 Bad apples don't have to spoil your trust...don't let bad apples sour your trust in people.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Without trust relationships are shallow and weak.

Don't let people's actions sour your trust.

Start With Self. On top of all the self-things I have written over the years, I'm adding self-trust.

We judge others by their actions; we judge ourselves by our intentions. We blame situations for our failures: we blame other people for their failures. We give credit to ourselves when we succeed: we give credit to their situations when other people succeed. (Attribution Bias)

Those are our tendencies.

Let's not allow those tendencies to draw too much of our attention to the bad apples.
