Thought Tweet #828

by Rick Baker
On Sep 18, 2013

Thought Tweet #828 Failure to spend up-front time building a succession plan that incorporates other people ensures two problems.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

  1. When the succession plan is built it will be built under stress, maybe even duress.
  2. The resulting value received from the business, if any, will be minimized.

Thought Tweet #715

by Rick Baker
On Apr 12, 2013

Thought Tweet #715 When a combination of skills, goals, & plans is not present, people give up their dreams & hope.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Skills, goals and plans will always be required. Without these basics work is demoralizing and frustrating. Without these basics, unless they have tremendous will, people give up their dreams and hope.

A new-and-improved picture of Leadership Priorities

Here is a new-and-improved picture of leadership priorities..

This picture shows the way leadership priorities need to be adapted.

This is the Strategic Picture. There is a hierarchy…

Strategic Thinking is the elite business function. Action without strategy will deliver, at best, short-lived success. In our commoditized world the pace of change is hyper-quick and every product and service gets copied as prices drop with competition.

Now - Leaders need step out of the rat-race and free up time for strategic thinking.

Leaders need to adapt by...

Creativity is key to differentiation. And differentiation is the key to attracting clients and growing volume and gross margin. Some folks have lots of creativity. Everyone can learn it. Leaders must lead by example or step aside and allow others to lead the creative process.

Creative processes are the way to Insight. And, Insights plus Relationships are the foundation for Influencing and expanding sales.

Here's a picture that captures that last point...

Thought Tweet #625

by Rick Baker
On Dec 7, 2012

Thought Tweet #625 Know what you know, see what you don't know: then, learn about making your business grow.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

There's an old saying, "What you don't know cannot hurt you."

...not a good idea to apply that to business

In business, 2 functions reign over all others. They are: Strategic Planning and Risk Management.

At the heart of Risk Management:

  • discovering how to uncover & see what you don't know - being present & checking reality
  • anticipating situations that contain risk and considering & planning for them before they happen

Thought Tweet #479

by Rick Baker
On May 17, 2012

Thought Tweet #479 Planning is not a cookie-cutter process; planning must blend strategic thinking with strategic intuition.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

In his 2007 book 'Strategic Intuition', William Duggan says his pilot course on strategic intuition begins with asking people to select the one statement, A or B, which best reflects how you think:

A: You achieve anything you want if you believe in yourself, set clear goals, and work hard.

B: You can achieve many things if you prepare for opportunity, see it, and act on it.

Boil Down Your Business

by Rick Baker
On Mar 1, 2012

Boil down your business.

That's what Robert Collier did at Volume 5 of his 1926 classic, 'The SECRET of the Ages'.

He stated, "Volumes have been written about personal efficiency, and general efficiency, and every other kind of efficiency in business."

Then he said,

"But when boiled down, it all comes to this:

  1. Know what you want.
  2. Analyze the thing you've got to do to get it.
  3. Plan your work ahead.
  4. Do one thing at a time.
  5. Finish that one thing and send it on its way before starting the next.
  6. Once started, KEEP GOING!"

I got a kick out of that straightforward, simple advice.

Points #4 and #5 are keys to developing talents involving  Attention, Concentration, & Focus.  They are also keys to overcoming frazzled Emotions.
