Thirsty Goals

If you are thirsty and you are like most of us, you set about getting a drink.

Before you get the drink...

You may go to the nearest faucet and drink directly from it. Or, you may think through a more-complicated plan that leads, ultimately, to a visit to Starbucks and have a frothy hit of sweet cappuccino. On the other hand, you may decide it is too late in the day to risk the stimulating effect of caffeine. You may plan to call a friend and ask her to join you for an herbal tea at your neighbourhood Tea House. Or, you may think about finding a drive-thru and grabbing a quick one for the road. Perhaps, you will pass a 7-11 and develop an urge for a cold drink? 

You could run through a long list of thirst-quenching goals.

Since human beings can last about 3 days without water, you could spend 3 or so days mulling over your decision.

While you are mulling, some new-thinkers might advise you of the senselessness of setting thirst-quenching goals and making thirst-quenching plans. And, you might accept their advice and set no goal or plan for obtaining water or any other fluid.

You could do that for about 3 days.


PS: You can lead a horse to water. Can you lead a person to water?

About prospecting for Clients

When you finally present stuff to a prospective client, the goal is:

To help the probable client want to hear more from you and see more of you...and only you.

Some tips on how to get that done: 

  • Get to the point - when it comes to words that influence, less is better
  • Touch the emotions - don't let 10  minutes pass without at least one touch
  • Hasten the pace - use simple, ear-friendly words and speak a little faster than average
  • Enjoy the flow - of more importance, help the Prospect enjoy an easy-to-follow flow of information
  • Be [your unique] yourself - let your talents & strengths shine through
  • Offer insight - be clear as you convey the unique value you deliver to your Ideal Clients 
 
The bottom line...

When you finally present stuff to a prospective client, the goal is to help the probable client want to hear more from you and see more of you...and only you.

Some people, perhaps many people, are annoyed by the pressure of setting goals. Many people, if not most people, love to learn about and make predictions. There is little to be gained by fighting against the flow. Rather than fighting against the flow, [at least to some degree] Leaders and managers can seek middle ground and help their people make predictions.

People love to make predictions...and People will embrace the predictions they make.

Examples of predictions people love to make and learn about:

  • bets on sports games
  • weather predictions, especially "Ground Hog Day"
  • stock market investments
  • Nostradamus predictions
Why not add business predictions to the list!

Don't shoot for the moon

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.”

This saying is attributed to Les Brown [motivational speaker] and Brian Littrell [lead singer - Backstreet Boys].

This is absolutely horrible advice.

I'm no physicist, but...if you miss the moon then the chances of landing among the stars is infinitesimal. There's a greater chance of hitting our Sun, which is of course a star, than there is escaping our solar system and landing among all those other trillions of stars. But, even with this nearest-star there's a hitch. You will burn up before you can land.

I'm no philosopher, but...there's an argument to be made: you have already landed among the stars. Fortunately, you have landed here on Earth where the nearest star does you much more good than harm and the rest of the stars, at least those visible to us, provide an awe-inspiring view at night. There is little to be gained in trying to re-position oneself among the stars.

I'm no rocket scientist, but...if you shoot for the moon then you just might hit it or, if you plan properly, you just might land on it. When I was a boy the Americans used to do that every once in a while. Yes - in the early 1960's President Kennedy spearheaded a space race to the moon. Kennedy began the race with one of the greatest motivational speeches of all time.

"We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too. It is for these reasons that I regard the decision last year to shift our efforts in space from low to high gear as among the most important decisions that will be made during my incumbency in the office of the Presidency."

Optimism, Pessimism, & Realism... how do you find the right overall balance and the right strategy for the situation at hand?

Some thoughts:

  1. Overall, be Optimistic: look for the bright side, consider the possibilities, be around and listen to others who are enthusiastic. Optimists live happier lives.
  2. Place realistic bounds on Optimism. Despite what they say about big, hairy audacious goals - BHAGs are not for everyone. And, often, over-zealous optimism injures other people.
  3. Pessimism demotivates. If you are naturally pessimistic...think before your share your views and your body language.
  4. Leaders - anticipate situations. And plan for situations...of course not all situations - but some. Recognize some people handle stress well and some folks handle stress poorly.
