Born to learn

by Rick Baker
On Oct 19, 2012

People are born with a natural talent for learning.

We learn by:

  • understanding self (starts with our body parts and how they interact with surroundings),
  • observing other people (our parents having a huge initial impact),
  • observing our surroundings (identifying patterns, posing & testing hypotheses)
  • perceiving (creating unique & personal explanations of the vast array of stimuli that 'hit' our senses),
  • memorizing knowledge (short-term & long-term memories of manifold experiences and perceptions),
  • imagining (holding images in our mind's eye...remembering past events and envisioning future events)
  • practicing skills (so they get hard-wired into our brains), and , of course,
  • interacting with people and things around us (from mirror neurons and Theory of Mind to mentors, trainers, and championship teams).

Born to learn: that's the way we are born.

Our learning takes the form of a life-long series of self-corrected behaviours coupled with a life-long series of successful outcomes and not-so-successful hard knocks.

People are created with a remarkable capacity for learning.

All people are created that way. Then individual experiences affect the duration and extent of learning. Also, individual choices affect the extent and duration of learning.

Here's an example of a string of thoughts about learning:

  • I was born to learn.
  • In the past, as I went about my learning, some people encouraged me and some people put me down.
  • Now, I see learning as my responsibility...I don`t seek encouragement and I am not put off by put downs.
  • Now, I see introspection as the ongoing starting point for learning...as the ancient Greek aphorism states - Know Thyself.
  • Now, I see individual strengths, wisdom, self-control, and positive attitude as the key ingredients for success in any endeavour...and each of these is the substance of life-long learning.
  • I know, to succeed in a business role, I must combine my talents and specialized knowledge with life-long practice and exploration of new things. That is the only way to master business work.
  • I know, because I have seen it first-hand, the capacity for learning does not have to wither with age...it is the one blessing that remains with us as long as we want it to and are prepared to do the brain work that self-feeds.
The capacity for life-long expanded learning is our unique blessing.

Thought Tweet #589 Interest generates Attention; Attention generates Interest. That's a double-sworded edge you can use to advantage.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Learn from what they do, not from what they say.

Begin with the Start in Mind

by Rick Baker
On Oct 18, 2012

Stephen Covey teaches 'The 7 Habits of Highly effective People'.

Covey's Habit #2 is 'Begin with the End in Mind'.

In summary - know where you want to go before you waste time and effort doing & going.

That's definitely good advice...however, I think it is more important to 'Begin with the Start in Mind'.

I say this for 2 reasons:

  1. Now is as real as it gets. Certainly, it is more real than the future. So, as we go about our business we do better when we get present and be present. Business is not primarily about end points. Business is about a chain of present thoughts, present feelings, and present actions. Business is about envisioning a future and acting now...and now is always the Start...in fact, now is the only time we have.
  2. When it comes to highly-effective performance, individual success is intimately tied to individual strengths. When we start business work, regardless of its nature - whether physical work or brain work - we start with a unique personal set of talents. Our innate talents exist prior to the arrival of our work. When work arrives we gain work-knowledge and we gain work-skills and to a degree we learn how to do the work. How much we learn and how well we do work depends on many things including the 'Big 3' - attitude, intelligence, & self-control. Most people know the Big 3 and make efforts to cover them. But - most people do not spend the time required to understand or measure the innate talents that represent the 4th major condition for successful performance of business work. Any serious plan for the future must give quality consideration to individual's innate talents - and do that now.
To successfully perform and delegate Business Tasks, we recommend a 'Big 4 Checklist':
  1. I understand the Innate Talents of the individual performing the work.
  2. The person has the right attitude about the work.
  3. The person has the intelligence - both cognitive and emotional - to do the work.
  4. The person has the self-control required in the work situation.

Thought Tweet #588 Why do so many people throttle back on learning as they mature and age?

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Are they disenchanted with work - uninspired?

Has 'the world' beaten curiosity out of them?

Do they not understand an active mind has the ability to self-sustain...to a ripe old age?

Thought Post #587 As our needs decrease our wants increase...in novelty, scale, and complexity...so far, wants are readily fulfilled.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

People's needs - like shelter, food, water - must be met. Not too long ago, the vast majority of our energy was spent fulfilling needs. Now, needs are easily met. So, our desires have escalated from needs to wants. Over the last generation or two, wants have become more novel, larger, and more complex. Even still, for the most part, these escalated wants have been easily met.
