People who think they are too busy see interpersonal differences as a problem rather than a blessing.

The Thinking Behind the Sales Tweet

If you think you are too busy and you take the time to compare where you are against where you could be then you may find you need some education on:

  • how to be honest with yourself
  • how to know yourself
  • how to embrace people-differences

When you think you are too busy you set limits on the amount of value you can generate.

I believe successful people have more time. I have written Thought Posts about it. At a conference I was fortunate to join a group of business leaders who presented their thoughts to University of Toronto students…those successful people had the time to do this on a Saturday… 500 students obtained value.

Bosses can easily be lured into the Parent Trap.

Bosses can easily be lured into the Parent Trap...I mean the trap where they treat the people who report to them like Children.

I have heard bosses say they are like parents and the people who report to them are like children. Recently, while listening to a self-help audio book I heard Brian Tracy recommend bosses behave like parents and treat their people like children.

I disagree.

Sure, I get the importance of being considerate, caring, compassionate...and having a level of sensitivity, sympathy and empathy. I just do not see those qualities as the defining qualities or Parents. First and foremost, at a very early age the vast majority of us learn our parents are authority figures...in fact, figures of absolute authority.

Many people, likely the majority of people, carry negative memories of parental-authority with them throughout their lives.

I favour the wisdom of Transactional Analysis

In the workplace, people are adults.

If bosses don't want people to act like Children, bosses have to act like Adults.

Here's a picture of the not-so-good news...

There's a reason the words confidence and competence have a similar ring to them.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

We see these two walking hand in hand.

We watch them promote one another.

When they are separated we observe signs of distress.

The Thinking Behind the Sales Tweet

Do what I say not what I do does not cut it. Probably, most of us can remember incidents when we were children and adults in positions of authority gave us instructions that they themselves did not follow. To the extent that happened, we learned to resist instructions that came to us as do what I say not what I do. As we gained experience and confidence our resistance to these inconsistent demands increased. Now, we have much trouble following instructions from people who do not lead by example. And, we distrust those who talk the talk but don’t walk the walk.
