The 'mob' is convinced someone else is responsible for motivating each and every one in the 'mob'.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

I used to write a lot about the 'mob'...

  • wrong thinkers
  • chronic complainers
  • narrow minders
  • finger pointers
  • frowners

...people who are just going through the business motions.

When People Who Lack Motivation Annoy You

by Rick Baker
On Jun 5, 2014

Many bosses complain about the lack of motivation they see in the people who follow them. Which raises the question, "Are the people actually following these bosses?" Perhaps, that is the simple key to understanding their lack of motivation?

Often, when we observe then criticize others our perceptions are those seen in a blurred mirror.

Followers' Frustration

by Rick Baker
On Jun 2, 2014

Have you noticed, in business, many followers are frustrated?

You see it at the drive-thru, you see it when you're shopping, you see it at the office... you see it everywhere.

Employee frustrations are costly. Employee frustrations lead to absenteeism, turnover, and disputes and conflicts between employees. Employee frustrations are often the cause behind clients becoming disgruntled.

There are literally mountains of self-help literature designed to deal with employee frustrations. Regardless, employee frustrations persist.

How are you addressing this problem?

Are you getting to the root causes?

Do you realize lack of self-confidence is the major cause underlying employee frustration?

Do you realize most people - most employees and most frustrated employees - do not understand that self-knowledge is required to battle self-confidence shortfalls?

Do you take the time to help your employees learn how to develop self-confidence?

Do you provide them tools to build self-confidence?

Do you provide them a role model to illustrate self-confidence?

Do you work at maintaining and building your own self-confidence?

***

Work at maintaining and building your self-confidence. Lead by example. Help your people maintain and build their self-confidence levels. Then they will be less frustrated. Being less frustrated they will perform better. Their improved performance will be infectious in a very positive way.

This is the route to inspiring people, influencing action, and improving business performance.

It's your personality, it's your choice

by Rick Baker
On May 14, 2014

Your personality will remain the same...as long as you allow it to. Or, perhaps your personality will struggle with age or sour with age if you ignore it. Only with conscious thought and effort will your personality improve.

Henry Ford said something like, "If you think you can or you think you can't, you are right."

His logic applies to personality.

"If you think you can change your personality or you think you can't change your personality, you are right."

So what do you choose to think?

And, do you intend to share your thoughts with others?

If so, which thought [the can thought or the can't thought] will provide them the most value?

And, which thought will provide you the most value?

If you are pleased with your personality, you are standing on solid ground.

If others are pleased by your personality, you are standing on higher ground.

When you are afraid of losing your job

by Rick Baker
On May 12, 2014

Fearing job loss:

Many people go to work, every day, fearing they will lose their jobs. Sometimes the fear is so strong it affects their behaviour and it becomes a 'self-fulfilling prophecy'...the thing they fear visits them...they lose their jobs.

I have seen this happen many times over my career.

I have noticed an interesting nuance. Sometimes the person who fears the job loss so much and then loses the job actually benefits from the albeit-unpleasant-at-the-time experience. Sometimes, after all the dust cleared, the person realized he or she really didn't fit the job and that 'disconnect' expressed itself as fear. Sometimes, after all the dust cleared, the person realized they didn't fit the organization - they didn't mesh well with the other people. Other times the person realized he or she needed to make some personal changes in order to be comfortable at work.

Clearly, there is a better way. People can seek self-discovery and work at self-improvement. People can reduce their fears. People can become fully confident in the value they deliver in their role.

People can employ their talents & strengths.

People can replace their bad habits with good habits.

People can reduce and remove their fears.

People own these choices.

Thought Tweet #996

by Rick Baker
On May 12, 2014

Thought Tweet #996 The only lasting reassurance comes from within...reassurance offered by others has little lasting power.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

While talking with a friend, the conversation turned to the topic of the obtaining value in the form of reassurance from others. My immediate thought was...see above.

Our self-confidence is our responsibility: it does not rest on the shoulders of others.
