As you work at Influencing people in 2015...

As you work at Influencing people in 2015...

Remember - their perceptions are their realities whereas your perceptions are your reality.

It is wrong to assume these perceptions or these realities are the same.

Instead, do what it takes to understand the similarities and differences in perceptions and realities:

  • This is the way to understand other people.
  • Of even more importance, this is the way to understand 'self'.

Understanding 'self' and others is the route to influencing 'self' and others.

And, influencing is the essence of leadership.

As you contemplate a productive 2015...

As you contemplate a productive 2015...

Consider the following questions:

  • For the upcoming year how would you define success?
  • What gaps exist between where your business is now and that success?
  • What personal changes do people (does each person) need to make to span those gaps?
  • What personal changes do you need to make to influence people as they span those gaps?
  • What help do you need to make your personal changes?

When I use the words "personal changes", I am thinking...

People Do Only 3 Things: Good Habits, Bad Habits, & New Things:

Good Habits take people toward their long-term goals and vision of success.

Bad Habits do not.

New Things are, by definition, "personal changes".

Changing Culture, Improving Performance

by Rick Baker
On Dec 10, 2014

I hear lots of people talking about business culture. I hear lots of people talking about the requirement for changes. I hear lots of people complaining about problems.

When I hear people talk of these things, I think about two things. First I think about peoples interests. Are people interested in themselves only or are they interested in another people? And, to what degree are they interested in other people? The next thing I think about is people's ability or inability to make change. Can the person change themselves? What are they doing to bring that about? Can the person influence others to make changes?

I think about people's interests. I think about people's ability to influence self [self-control] and ability to influence others. A picture with four quadrants comes to mind.

I meet many people who, when they are talking about co-workers, describe them as self-centred and entrenched...unable to change...negatively influencing others. It is clear the people who express these views consider themselves to be different. They consider themselves to be much less self-centred and much more capable to accept and bring about change. I suppose this is just another example of how the attribution bias manifests itself on a widespread and frequent basis.

We tend to view others more harshly than we view ourselves.

Perhaps it's our egos working to protect us?

And I wonder - Can self-centred people have a positive influence on others?

If you are not obtaining the results you want when you attempt to influence other people's behavior check your communication.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Your performance at communication will definitely be part of the problem.

If you find your communication is lacking in strength, provide yourself opportunities to obtain knowledge about communication. Then practice communication, observe the results, and adjust your communication techniques until you succeed. You will know you are succeeding when your ability to influence others expands.

Communication tip: The processes you use when you communicate influence people more than the logic you express.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

According to Chip Heath and Dan Heath ['Decisive', 2013] "When the researchers compared whether process or analysis was more important in producing good decisions - those that increased revenues, profits, and market share - they found that "process mattered more than analysis - by a factor of six.""

Good Decision Making relies on good decision-making processes.

Good Influencing relies on good influence-making processes.

Show people you get them.

Show people you can change.

Lead change, by example.
