Enthusiasm @Work

Who would you rather be around, someone who is enthusiastic or someone who is the opposite?

Who would you rather mimic, someone who is enthusiastic or someone who is the opposite?

Who would you rather follow, someone who is enthusiastic or someone who is the opposite?

The answer seems rather obvious. Most people would rather be around, mimic, and follow other people who are enthusiastic.

Enthusiasm is a rare but highly contagious mindset.

Unfortunately, so is lack of enthusiasm.

Which leaves us with choices...

We can keep our eyes open for enthusiasm.

We can find celebrate enthusiasm.

We can initiate enthusiasm.

How do you know you are at your best?

How do you know you are at your best?

Do you take the time to set standards for your own performance?

Do you live up to your own expectations?

That was a topic of discussion the other day.

Some of my thoughts...

I know I am at my best when:

  1. I am thinking clearly. I am able to focus on specific topics and concentrate my thoughts on these topics to the exclusion of other thoughts not related to those topics.
  2. My emotions are under control. When I feel negative emotions I identify them immediately and I set them aside replacing them with more positive thoughts.
  3. I am fully engaged in the moment. I am not agonizing or stewing over the past. I am not worrying about the future.
  4. I am organized. My thoughts are organized and my physical surroundings are organized.
  5. I am in harmony with other people. My relationships are glowing in quality. My interactions with people are constructive.
  6. I am doing things that build value.
  7. I set aside time to envision a better future.

Why not aim for excellent performance?

Why not strive for task and process mastery?

Why not strive for craftsmanship?

Why not aim for minimal errors?

Why not aim for clear communication? 

Why not aim to deliver on all the commitments we make to our clients?

Why not meet the time deadlines we agreed to?

It’s an issue of character.

It's an issue of culture.

Why not aim for a culture of excellence?

Some people just can't buy into other's ideas

ANTs and other buy-in killers...

What is it about some people that makes it so hard for them to buy into other people's ideas and requests?

Is it just intolerant attitude?

Is it resistance to not-made-at-home ideas?

Is it fear from ANTs, those nagging automatic negative thoughts?

There's no question we all suffer from those ANTs...those little voices in the backs of our minds that keep sending us strings of warnings about other people and their nasty or misguided intentions. Those little voices in the backs of our minds that work around the clock in an effort to protect us and our interests. Those little voices in the backs of our minds that deliver never-ending streams of ANTs.

Yes, I suspect it's those ANTs that cause us to resist buying into other people's ideas.

Yes, if we ever want to buy into other people's ideas we must get our ANTs under control.

...let's set some ANT traps.

That Aversion to the Details

When people are at work, why do they avoid the details?

Do they feel they are too busy and do not have time to attend to the details?

Do they think the details are someone else's responsibility rather than part of their job?

Do they feel too bored or too fatigued to bother with the details?

Do they choose to avoid the details so they can concentrate on big-picture things?

Do they choose to avoid the details because they know others are more skilled with the details?

Do they choose to avoid certain details so they can think about other details?

Do they feel frustrated as they avoid the details?

Do they feel energized as they avoid the details?

Do they feel weakened as they avoid the details?

Do they feel strengthened as they avoid the details?

Does their business falter as they avoid the details?

Does their business gain advantage as they avoid the details?

That aversion to the details can be a wonderful thing for all involved...or it can be brutal.

If that aversion to the details is a wonderful thing at your workplace then figure out how to replicate it.

If that aversion to the details is a brutal thing at your workplace then figure out how to stop it.
