Thought Tweet #686

by Rick Baker
On Mar 4, 2013

Thought Tweet #686 Deliberate practice allows us to take talent to task. Don't Wing It.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Take Talent To Task: Take Task To Talent.

That's a lot better than taking weakness to tasks and taking tasks to people who are not capable of doing the tasks well.

And, it's a lot better than guessing or winging it at work.

Helping business people double their performance

by Rick Baker
On Feb 26, 2013

In order to improve how we perform in business we need to grow as business people.

In order to grow as business people we need support: mentoring, guidance, education...in a word - leadership.

People double their performance when they are in a supportive atmosphere.

It has taken some time for me to learn this lesson…and, from time to time, I still slip up. It seems some of us were not born to be nurturing, empathetic, or patient. And some of us struggle with people-differences and relationships.

Some of us will do much better as leaders if we recognize we need to make a major adjustment to our character. I was one of those people. I have worked at adjusting my character over the last 10 years.

And, I have seen proof that support from the leader is an essential ingredient for positive changeThe keys to positive change are talents and strengths.

Every person has Talents…it takes time, effort, and expertise to find Talents and turn them into Strengths.

"All the leaders I've met, worked with, and read about have had one thing in common. Along the way to becoming practitioners and masters of leadership, they transformed their character."

Thought Tweet #677

by Rick Baker
On Feb 19, 2013

Thought Tweet #677 In general, people don't lack the desire to make changes. They lack the skill

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

"They lack the skill." When it comes to change, skill is a multi-edged sword

One sharp edge - the person who delivers the change-decision must deliver that decision with skill.

Another sharp edge - the person who receives the change-decision must receive that decision with skill

Another sharp edge - the people who implement the change-decision must perform the decision with skill

That's a lot of skill...that's the skill-work we must commit to if we want to make constructive change.

Thought Tweet #673

by Rick Baker
On Feb 13, 2013

Thought Tweet #673 Talents are not what we do; Talents are the 'substances' that define us and make us unique.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Talents are the numbers of our personal combination lock; talents are the keys to our desires and action-drivers.

Talents stand to explain why we do what we do.

Business Leaders Need to Stop De-Motivating Their People

by Rick Baker
On Feb 12, 2013

A leader cannot motivate anyone else.

A leader can inspire followers.

A leader can lead by example.

Leaders are self-motivated…if they are not then they soon lose their followers.

While people cannot motivate others, they can de-motivate others.

Leaders do this far too often.

When people are in roles that involve Tasks outside their Talent & Strength Zones, they will tend to be de-motivated.

Leaders must ensure that roles and tasks fit people’s Talents & Strengths.

Only then will people be self-motivated.

Put another way…leaders need to make sure the seats on the bus fit the people and make sure the people fit the seats on the bus.

This is a lot of detailed work…that’s the price 21st Century business leaders will have to pay in order to succeed.

Here's the picture...
