When the going gets tough...[you must tell] the tough [People how to] get going.

by Rick Baker
On Mar 17, 2015

Talk's cheap. And, slogans like "When the going gets tough the tough get going" are at best mildly encouraging and at worst annoying.

While People generally want to succeed after the going gets tough, most People have never received 'use-able' advice on how to make that happen.

There are many strategies and systems for dealing with tough People and tough Situations [i.e., Situations involving, of course, People]. There are complex pictures and laborious processes for handling complaints, being assertive, and delivering crucial conversations. Most of these strategies and systems are too complicated, too convoluted, and far too 'artificial' for most people to embrace.

There is a better way...not just a better way, a better & simpler way...a way that is not contrived.

To cover challenges of tough People and tough Situations, Mark Weber taught me one of the most valuable lessons I have ever learned...

This area of business - dealing with tough People and tough Situations - is such an important facet of business [and life]...it warrants its own Master Rule.

Business Contains Only 3 Things and why not Seek Simple?

When a senior person's competence is being questioned...

by Rick Baker
On Jan 19, 2015

When a senior-team person’s competence is being questioned we leaders have only 3 choices, we can:

1.Be confident the person can do the job. If we select this option then we, as leaders, must help the person succeed. We cannot second guess the person’s capability and/or send signals we think the person is going to fail. We must adjust our mindsets to contain only positive thinking and roll up our sleeves and help.

2.Be confident the person cannot do the job. If we select this option then we must expedite the person’s departure. That’s in everyone’s best interest. Lengthy, unsuccessful discussions about flawed performances sour relationships, kill positive momentum, and sour the business culture.

3.Be confused about whether the person will succeed and have a plan that will remove that confusion within a set time limit. It is OK for leaders to be confused about a senior person’s abilities as long as (1) they know they are confused, (2) they set time boundaries for removal of that confusion and (3) they set clear action plans to remove that confusion within those time boundaries.

People Do Only 3 Things

by Rick Baker
On Jan 12, 2015

We can reduce confusion and remove complexity by creating powerful thoughts that are easy to share with others. We can treat these thoughts as 'philosophies to live by'. We can rely on these thoughts to help us handle even the most-difficult decisions, including decisions around interpersonal conflicts.

"People Do Only 3 Things" is one of those seek-simple philosophies. It promotes self-understanding, which expands the ability to understand others. And, understanding self then others is the only way to build Power of Influence - the essence of Leadership.

You can use "People Only Do 3 Things" thinking to expand your ability to Inspire People - Influence Action - Grow Wealth!

Business Involves Only 3 Actions: doing deals, delivering value, and receiving value.

by Rick Baker
On Oct 15, 2014

Doing Deals: the actions taken to obtain clients

Delivering Value: the actions taken to serve clients

Receiving Value: the actions taken to obtain money from clients

***

With proper coverage of these three actions a business survives.

Each of these actions requires a specific set of technical skills.

Each of these actions requires 'at-least-sufficient' people skills.

***

Very few entrepreneurs can excel at all 3 actions.

Some entrepreneurs, with a little help from others, can build a $1,000,000 business that covers all 3 actions.

Most successful entrepreneurs require ongoing assistance and expertise from other people to cover at least 2 of these actions.
