Thought Tweet #795

by Rick Baker
On Aug 2, 2013

Thought Tweet #795 The Leader must set the overall Goals for the company. You know that. Do you do it?

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

The Leader must also set personal Goals....consistent with business Goals, Personal Values, and the Leader's Vivid Vision.  These Goals must be well-communicated to all followers. And, the Leader must lead by example.

And Actions speak louder than words.

Thought Tweet #794 Leaders do best when it is clear they have sacred Rules, which we call “The Master Rules”.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Master Rules: these are rules set by the Leader and well-communicated by the Leader to all followers.

The Master Rules must not be bent. And, if they are broken then the consequences are clear and enforced. The Master Rules must capture the essence of the Leader’s Personal Values, mesh with the Leader’s Strengths, and serve as clear directions towards the Leader's Vivid Vision.

Thought Tweet #793 Personal Values and Strengths are wonderful ingredients…when they are put to good use.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

People can lead extremely happy and fulfilled lives when those two personal things are aligned and put to good use. That use does not have to be leadership. Leadership introduces another layer of complexity. To illustrate this, we added a wrapping called Vision - the Leader’s Vivid Vision. If you want to lead then you owe it to your followers to provide the Leader’s Vision. And – that Vivid Vision has to include the delivery of value to real clients. That way, the followers have at least a fighting chance to succeed. You expand that chance for success by making your Vision vivid. And, communicating it with sticky stories….real stories…personal stories. You are able to do that when you know how to apply your Personal Values and your Strengths and you can envision the end point and the generation of value…ie, the business value that must be exchanged if you are to get to that desired end point.

Thought Tweet #787 If you want to see bigger pictures, first learn bigger frames.

The Thought Behind The Tweet

Lots of business people talk about Vision. Some argue it is the essence of leadership.

'Seeing the Big Picture' - you have heard that expression.

But - what about big frames?

Who talks about the value inherent in big frames?

Open your mind to bigger frames.

Look at bigger frames from different perspectives.

Understand - Value rarely exists in bigger pictures which have not been captured by bigger frames.

Put another way - sure, [even though I have a pet peeve about the phrase] go ahead and think out of the box...just make sure your big pictures are framed big.

If you want to see bigger pictures, first learn bigger frames.

If I was your CEO, I would...

by Rick Baker
On Jul 19, 2013

If I was your CEO, I would:

  1. Create an organization chart, clearly spelling out the key roles and activities required for success in 2013 in this industry sector.
  2. Create a clear written Vision statement, describing what I want to see in 3 years...complemented by 3 personal stories to help people understand: Why (I want it this way), How (I want people to behave...facets of Character and Values), and What (things are Vital Tasks and Actions).
  3. Set Goals, with first focus on: People`s Talents, Clients' Value Propositions, Gross Margin, & Cashflow
  4. Put in place the tools that ensure the ability to Measure performance...a Performance Tracking System
  5. Interview/review all staff, starting with the people in key roles, to determine if they are: clearly keepers, quality performers, or risky investments...taking talent to task
  6. Create and implement a People development Strategy: for each keeper and quality individual...with attention to role, role description, reporting, role-in-teams, self-monitoring and self-reporting...and with commitment to self-development, commitment to people & their Talents, commitment to systems (including Measures of Actions and results), commitment to self-development, and commitment to communication improvement.
  7. Create and implement an Operations Improvement Strategy: defining desired Client relationships and processes; defining philosophies about Money; clarifying what Service means (and how to deliver it); clarifying what Quality means (and how to deliver it) and clarifying what Profit means (and how to earn and collect it).
In summary...

If I was your CEO, I would set...

  1. the Required Strengths...an org chart picture
  2. the Vision
  3. the Goals
  4. the metrics and Measures for performance tracking
  5. the Right People in the right roles: taking talent to task
  6. the People Development Strategy
  7. the Operations Improvement Strategy
And, I would do those things in that order.

Thought Tweet #775.5

by Rick Baker

Thought Tweet #775.5 Be clear about your Interests and state your Vision...then let your people express their Talents around your Vision.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Be clear about your Interests...people need to know what you want...stories help them understand and remember.

State your Vision...people need to know what you see in your imagination..stories help them understand and remember.

Admirable Interests and Vivid Visions are magnetic...they attract Talented people...and Talented people express their Talents...success follows.
