Why Not?

by Rick Baker
On Aug 21, 2014

Why not aim for excellent performance?

Why not strive for task and process mastery?

Why not strive for craftsmanship?

Why not aim for minimal errors?

Why not aim for clear communication?

Why not aim to deliver on all the commitments we make to our clients?

Why not meet the time deadlines we agreed to?

It’s an issue of character.

It's an issue of culture.

Why not aim for a culture of excellence?

Personal Values and Strengths are wonderful ingredients…when they are put to good use.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

People can lead extremely happy and fulfilled lives when those two personal things are aligned and put to good use. That use does not have to be leadership. Leadership introduces another layer of complexity. To illustrate this, we added a wrapping called Vision – the Leader’s Vivid Vision. If you want to lead then you owe it to your followers to provide the Leader’s Vision. And – that Vivid Vision has to include the delivery of value to real clients. That way, the followers have at least a fighting chance to succeed. You expand that chance for success by making your Vision vivid. And, communicating it with sticky stories….real stories…personal stories. You are able to do that when you know how to apply your Personal Values and your Strengths and you can envision the end point and the generation of value…ie, the business value that must be exchanged if you are to get to that desired end point.

Be clear about your Interests and state your Vision...then let your people express their Talents around your Vision.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Be clear about your Interests...people need to know what you want...stories help them understand and remember.

State your Vision...people need to know what you see in your imagination..stories help them understand and remember.

Admirable Interests and Vivid Visions are magnetic...they attract Talented people...and Talented people express their Talents...then success follows.

Authentic Self-confidence, properly illustrated and linked to Vision: this is at the essence of leadership.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

It takes various forms, as examples:

  • Alexander the Great did it his way…on the backs of horses leading the charge
  • Mahatma Gandhi did it his way…on the consciences of his nation’s oppressors
  • Richard Branson does it his way…on the dreams in achievers’ hearts

Confidence is a magical state of mind; Confidence is a much-valued state of mind.

When your confidence meter is properly set your opportunity to succeed in business is amplified, often many times over. Self-confidence, near the upper end of reasonable bounds, is the magnetic recipe that attracts the things you need most to succeed in business: the co-operation and enthusiasm residing in yourself and in other people.

On Influence

by Rick Baker
On Mar 24, 2014

Influence is the magical part of leadership.

Influence is the magic that allows leaders to convert Vision and Desire into amazing actions and thrilling accomplishments.

So...How does one positively Influence others along the road to success?

Q: Does one need to be Intelligent?

A: Yes.

Q: Does one need to master Self-Control?

A: Yes

Q: Does one have to have Integrity?

A: Yes...if the success is to be constructive and sustained.

Q: Does one have to know People, Processes, & Situations?

A: Yes.

Q: Any other things?

A: Yes...here's 5...and here's 5 more...and here's another 5...and there's more.

What do the wise have to say about Influence?

My favourite inspirational educator, Napoleon Hill said...

"Think twice before you speak, because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another."

One of my heroes, Napoleon Bonaparte, said...

"The herd seek out the great, not for their sake but for their influence; and the great welcome them out of vanity or need."

Dale Carnegie, who wrote the book on how to win friends and influence people, said...

“When dealing with people, let us remember we are not dealing with creatures of logic. We are dealing with creatures of emotion, creatures bristling with prejudices and motivated by pride and vanity.”

Clint Eastwood, a widely respected Hollywood icon, said...

"It takes tremendous discipline to control the influence, the power you have over other people's lives."

And an unknown author said...

"Influence may be the highest level of human skills."

If you want to be a great leader, or a good leader, or even a leader who accomplishes a few meaningful things...it's tough to argue that last point.

PS: Sustained positive Influence is the cause that leads to trust.
