Sales Tweet #255

by Rick Baker
On Jul 8, 2011
Sales Tweet #255 Ernest Seller had another one of those weird dreams last night.

The Thinking Behind the Sales Tweet
The Dream: Ernest, his co-worker Don Trodden & The Boss received a special-delivery notice. The 3 of them had to visit to show identification so they could get the package. When they opened the package it contained a lamp. They rubbed it. A genie appeared and granted each of them a one wish. Ernest wished first…he wished he could be fishing with his buddies. Poof – he disappeared. Don Trodden wished next. To The Boss’ surprise he wished he could travel back in time to be a sultan in a Turkish harem. Poof – he was gone. The Boss then had his wish. He wished Ernest and Don would be back to work in 3 minutes.

Mind CONTROL

Mind CONTROL

Have you ever made up your mind? Probably, you’ve said you’ve done that many times. Probably, you’ve said something like, “Well, I have given it some thought and I have made up my mind”. Then you went on to explain your decision.

OK, you agree, you have made up your mind in the past.

How did you do it?

When you made up your mind, I suppose:
  1. You started with your mind ‘as it was’,
  2. You considered some options,
  3. You thought in an organized way, &
  4. You came to a decision and got it done.
Yes…that sounds like the way you make up your mind.

Much like you have make up your bed….right?

You make up your mind and you make up your bed…those are just parts of everyday life…right1?

OK, you agree…let’s compare those two facts of everyday life.

When you made up your bed:
  1. You started with your bed ‘as it was’…it was all messy,
  2. You considered some options…including, doing nothing because you’re just going to undo it later,
  3. You thought in an organized way…including thoughts like: what happens if relatives visit and go through my room... I shall fluff up the pillows and place them just so... I shall pull up the sheets... etc, &
  4. You came to a decision and got it done...you stepped back and admired your fine work.
Notice how I slipped in some detail at each step.

Let’s go back and try to slip some detail into the sequence of making up your mind.
  1. You started with your mind ‘as it was’…
OK – how ‘was it’?

How was your mind when you started to make it up?

Here’s a tougher question…

What was your mind when you started to make it up?

What is your mind?

Write out a clear answer to that last question:

My mind is

***

If you are struggling with defining or describing your mind then recognize you are not alone. For example, see Footnote 2…it provides the Merriam-Webster dictionary’s definition of the noun ‘mind

***

If you are thinking “I don’t need to know what my mind is in order to be able to use it or make it up or control it” then you may be treating your mind worse than you treat common possessions like your bed.

***

When you have a clear answer to the question “What is your mind?” then we will be able to move on to step #2 of Mind CONTROL.

Footnotes:
  1. Please review the at the beginning of this ‘commentary’. For greater certainty, it would be extremely dangerous to interpret this metaphor as a statement in support of the art of . .WARNING making up beds This bed-making example is for solely presented because of its rich illustrative value
  2. Merriam-Webster on-line dictionary definition of the word MIND
    1 : recollection, memory <keep that in mind> <time out of mind>
2 a: the element or complex of elements in an individual that feels, perceives, thinks, wills, and especially reasons b: the conscious mental events and capabilities in an organism c: the organized conscious and unconscious adaptive mental activity of an organism
    3 : intention, desire <I changed my mind>
4 : the normal or healthy condition of the mental faculties
    5 : opinion, view
    6 : disposition, mood
7 a: a person or group embodying mental qualities <the public mind> b: intellectual ability
8 capitalized Christian Science: god 1b
9 : a conscious substratum or factor in the universe
    10 : attention <pay him no mind>

Sales Tweet #254

by Rick Baker
On Jul 7, 2011
Sales Tweet #254 Don Trodden: “Boss, why did you take an instant dislike to me?" The Boss: “To save time”.

The Thinking Behind the Sales Tweet
We haven’t heard much about Ernest’s co-worker Don Trodden. I guess it’s one of the ‘out of sight – out of mind’ things. Speaking about out-of-mind things…often Don Trodden feels like he is out of his mind. He asks himself,“Why else would I continue to work for The Boss?” And, as we shall see that’s a darned-good question.

TRUST THE INTEGRITY OF OUR SERVICE

by Rick Baker
On Jul 6, 2011
Jiffy Lube

I drive by this sign at least 10 times a week…probably, closer to 20 times.

It caught my attention the first time I saw it and every time I pass it I wonder if the sign works.

I have had a thing about Integrity claims ever since Enron claimed Integrity as its Corporate Value.

Here are a couple of links to prior Thought Posts….the first one contains a definition of Integrity:
About that sign advertisement: “TRUST THE INTEGRITY OF OUR SERVICE”.

Does the sign work?

Does it bring clients into jiffy lube, the business that posts the sign?

Is it intended to speak to new prospective [probable] clients?

Is it intended to speak to existing clients, providing a reminder of past good service?

Does it exude ‘Trust, Integrity & Service’ the key points of the advertisement?

Does that fellow in the picture have a face of Integrity? Does he look like someone you can Trust?

Does the sign differentiate jiffy lube from its competitors?

Does the sign help jiffy lube achieve its business goals?

Sales Tweet #253

by Rick Baker
On Jul 6, 2011
Sales Tweet #253 When asked why he was so late for work Ernest Seller answered, “I couldn’t find my new white shoes”.

The Thinking Behind the Sales Tweet
Ernest is a real honest guy. Even if The Boss didn’t know that he wouldn’t second-guess an explanation like that. But, that doesn’t do anything to ease The Boss’ anxiety about a 21st Century sales guy who loves white shoes. Why, it’s almost cliché! Why, you just can’t make stuff like that up!

Sales Tweet #252

Sales Tweet #252 Miss Tayken, The Boss’ secretary believes in punctuality…she fixes commas and other squiggly things.

The Thinking Behind the Sales Tweet
When Miss Tayken was first hired The Boss asked if she could type. She said, “No but my sister can”. She has come a long way. And, she is fond of Ernest so she tries to help him out. The operative word there is ‘tries’.
