Don't shoot for the moon

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.”

This saying is attributed to Les Brown [motivational speaker] and Brian Littrell [lead singer - Backstreet Boys].

This is absolutely horrible advice.

I'm no physicist, but...if you miss the moon then the chances of landing among the stars is infinitesimal. There's a greater chance of hitting our Sun, which is of course a star, than there is escaping our solar system and landing among all those other trillions of stars. But, even with this nearest-star there's a hitch. You will burn up before you can land.

I'm no philosopher, but...there's an argument to be made: you have already landed among the stars. Fortunately, you have landed here on Earth where the nearest star does you much more good than harm and the rest of the stars, at least those visible to us, provide an awe-inspiring view at night. There is little to be gained in trying to re-position oneself among the stars.

I'm no rocket scientist, but...if you shoot for the moon then you just might hit it or, if you plan properly, you just might land on it. When I was a boy the Americans used to do that every once in a while. Yes - in the early 1960's President Kennedy spearheaded a space race to the moon. Kennedy began the race with one of the greatest motivational speeches of all time.

"We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too. It is for these reasons that I regard the decision last year to shift our efforts in space from low to high gear as among the most important decisions that will be made during my incumbency in the office of the Presidency."

80% of people are not engaged at work.

Most people have, at best, a vague understanding of their personal strengths.

They have perceptions of things they can do well...but, they have little understanding of "why".

Without an understanding of "why" they have little ability to put their natural talents to best use or to full use.

That’s one of the main reasons 80% of people are not engaged at work.

Again - Most people have, at best, a vague understanding of their personal strengths.

And - Most people have even less understanding of other people's personal strengths.

That’s another one of the main reasons 80% of people are not engaged at work.

Most people understand results better than causes...and personal strengths are the root causes leading to success-effects.

Most people, if they apply their minds to it can gain a good understanding of their personal strengths.

Most people do not take the time to apply their minds in that direction.

They are too busy. 

As a result, most workplaces score poorly when it comes to putting personal strengths to work. 

Personal strengths align with good feelings and better results. 

When feelings and actions are out of synch with personal strengths we see:

  • Substandard performance
  • Negative attitude
  • Inattention
  • Errors
  • Fire Fighting

And we see 80% of people not engaged at work.

What a Negative Mob out there!

There's a lot of negative stuff out there!

Bad news makes good news. Bad news sells. Crimes and unfortunate accidents get lots of air time. It seems we receive news in a ratio of 5 doses of bad news for each dose of good news.

The reality TV craze shows us an unending string of personal difficulty: interventions, biggest losers, mental illness, fallen celebrities, and workplace dysfunction. As we are exposed to all these poor folks, those less fortunates, we receive regular breaks in the form of TV commercials. The TV commercials show us many new remedies for regular aches and pains and also many new physical and mental diseases we have never heard of. Some of the remedy side-effects described in these commercials are mind-numbing. And, the rule seems to be 'no statement of a long list of nasty side effects then call your doctor'. In effect, we are being trained to contact our doctors to request medications for ailments that people choose not to name on TV. Negative stuff!

Video games and movies, thanks to exceptional special effects and relaxed regulation, are delivering buckets full of violence, blood, & gore.

We live in a continuous bombardment of readily-available information.

And, those who deliver that bombardment make sure it contains a very heavy dose of negative stuff.

Over time, the assault of the Negative Mob affects us...some more than others.

A recruiting test that LASTS

When you are recruiting senior business people, consider using an approach that can survive the test of time.

An approach that...

...LASTS 

LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL: does this person possess the ability or potential to contribute at the leadership team level? 

ATTITUDE: does this person have the ability to remain helpful, positive, energetic, & focused under negative situations?

STRENGTHS: does this person possess the talent, knowledge, & skills for the role and its specific tasks?

THINKING POWER: is this person able to think accurately, creatively, strategically, with an open mind, & a solution-orientation?

SELF-CONTROL: is this person able to self-monitor & self-regulate, particularly when situations are stressing and straining?
