Communication Russian Roulette: shooting off your mouth, ignorant of what your brain has placed in the cylinder behind your muzzle.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

You meet people whose brain-to-mouth filters fail on a regular basis.

And you see the damage happening in real time: damage to themselves, damage to others.

Communication is like a paper-towel paradox: the thicker the explanation the less absorbent the message.

If it don't make sense and the explanations that follow make even less sense...methinks the person doth protest too much.

When you mess up a communication - stop, think, accept the burden of error, and speak concisely, with clarity.

There's a good reason why Shakespeare put that "doth protest too much" line in Hamlet. Many people are unable to express an objection and leave it at that. Rather, many people express an objection and go on and on...providing either gory details or more examples, or both.

Now I must stop here before I too doth protest too much...

Loose Cannons Fire At Will...and they fire at pretty much everyone else within earshot and nearshot. Loose cannons get unhinged before you can blink and they blast-fire with little or no warning. Sometimes their pins slip and they tilt and blow the planks right from under your feet...leaving you with nothing to stand on. And, sometimes, after repetitive volleys they cause your ship to list, take on water, and maybe even sink.

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for loose cannons. When you hear them rumbling around and exploding, take corrective measures...for the sake of ship safety and security.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Sometimes those little voices in our heads goad us into thoughts and actions that really defy logic. Deep down we know the thoughts and actions are tainted and flawed, yet we allow them to grow and swell and sometimes get way out of control.

Sometimes we set aside all the good advice our mothers worked so hard to teach: for example, if you can't say something nice...

Sometimes we forget constructive criticism is an oxymoron.

Respond to cries for help with listening ears, seeing eyes and thinking brains...rather than with your cries for help..

As Eckhart Tolle said, “Most people respond to a cry for help with a cry for help”.

You can find plenty of opportunities to break that communication pattern!
