About Influencing Powerful People - #1

by Rick Baker
On Jan 27, 2019

Here's a quote from Dirk Schlimm -

I learned that influencing powerful people is a better and more effective route than complaining about them.

This quote touches two important Spirited Leaders' philosophies -

Constructive Criticism is an Oxymoron

and

Influence is the Essence of Leadership.

You are so derisive...if only you could change that "r" to a "c" you'd have one good character attribute going for you.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

This thought occurred to me while I was trying not to listen to a particularly annoying nitpicker.

...but for one letter...

Ever since, I cannot witness criticism without having at least a slight smile.

Our fingers naturally point outwards. Perhaps that's why we point at others when it's time to place blame.

The joys of evolution!

It seems [until someone helps me understand otherwise] we humans are the only animals capable of pointing fingers at others.

We alone enjoy all the benefits of both opposing thumbs and blame-pointing fingers.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

When you have authority, most people shut down, in one way or another, in response to your criticism...

  • Maybe you want them to shut down...and be destructive?
  • Maybe you don't want to shut them down...and be constructive?
  • Maybe you haven't thought about the difference between being constructive and being destructive?

...what are you trying to accomplish with all your criticism?

Winners seek solutions and think of better places. Losers agonize over problems and fear uncertainty.

The choice is yours.

Choose fixing the problem over fixing the blame.

May your molehills remain molehills and may your ego choose molehills over mountain climbing.

Better to climb mountains in your mind than on the back of your donkey-ego.
