Learn how to kill negative thoughts before negative thoughts kill your willpower

Willpower: that's when the brain, through conscious thought, forces/guides the body to behave in ways that lead toward [are consistent with] long-term goals.

Willpower requires two things:

  1. will & 
  2. power 

Science tells us power is the rate of doing work. And, we all know work takes effort, consumes energy, is hard to do relative to other things.

The human brain cannot perform negative thoughts and exercise willpower at the same time. Since willpower is tough to do and negative thinking is easy to do the brain favours negative thinking. So - the slightest amount of negative thought energy has the ability to totally displace willpower. This is how your negative thoughts kill your willpower.

They key to exercising willpower is learning how to nip negative thoughts in the bud.

In order to nip negative thoughts in the bud, you need a plan & a process. I suppose there are many ways to go about nipping negative thoughts in the bud. However, I have only found one that works for me. I find two things must be done before I can nip negative thoughts in the bud:

  1. Stillness: I must stop moving and remain as still as possible for, at least, a short period of time.
  2. Silence: I must be silent and, to the extent possible, be in a quiet environment.
I have found Stillness & Silence provide the best opportunity to monitor thoughts. When I monitor my thoughts I can quickly determine my negative thoughts. They show us as worries, anxieties, and little stresses and strains and they do not take me toward my desired goals. My negative thoughts are trouble-causing servants of my Ego. They are the signals of my bad habits and the catalysts that drive my bad habits. They reduce my ability to achieve my desired goals.

Only after negative thoughts are identified and recognized as negative can they be removed. Negative thoughts come to us so naturally and are very easy to do...so it can be difficult, or seem difficult, to remove them. With practice, difficult things become easy. Practice improves the ability to remove unwanted thoughts.

When we remove our negative thoughts we pave the path for our willpower. Actually, we partially pave the path. Willpower will never walk on easy paths. Willpower can come easier...but never easy. Willpower will always require 'will', which is a good habit that takes hold when you have and practice a plan and a process. Willpower will always require 'power', which can only exist when negative thoughts are removed.

On Purpose, With Willpower

What awesome power lies in the combination of strong willpower guided by strong definite life-purpose.

Willpower is wonderful, but without proper guidance it consumes energy without purpose.

Definite purpose is wonderful, but without willpower to guide and control action it is unattainable.

When strong and combined, willpower and definite purpose are destined to succeed…and be accompanied by lives well lived.

Are you living on purpose?

Are you living with willpower?

Are you living on purpose with willpower?

If not, why not…

  • Through ignorance...you've never learned about purpose and willpower?
  • Through lack of hope...you do not believe you have the ability to change/determine your fate?
  • Because you doubt purpose and willpower are the key ingredients...you think there is a better way?

About choosing to develop Self-Control

How often do you think about your Intelligence & your Self-Control?

Every human being possesses the seeds of intelligence and self-control at birth. To a certain degree, and the degree varies from person to person, we develop these two abilities over time. The amount of intelligence and self-control we develop determines the extent we are able to express our strengths

It takes drive to develop your Intelligence.

It takes drive to develop your Self-Control.

It takes even more drive to develop both Intelligence & Self-Control.

And, drive consumes energy. Drive consumes energy as it formulates thoughts in your brain. Drive consumes more energy as it converts those thoughts into action.

And, in many situations, drive consumes large amounts of energy when it converts thoughts into the non-action required when your willpower is called upon to limit behavior to satisfy your Self-Control goal.

What is your Self-Control goal?

Oh, you’ve not set a Self-Control goal.

That’s not a surprise.

Most people do not view Self-Control as a ‘general’ stand-alone trait/ability. Most people only consider Self-Control as it can be applied in ‘specific’ situations. Most people do not cross-pollinate their specific and relatively small Self-Control wins.

Most people do not set the Self-Control bar high enough.

You do not have to be like most people.

It is a matter of choice.

Self-Control, one of our greatest gifts, is a matter of choice.

Inspire People - Influence Action - Grow Wealth!

In business, as in other endeavours, the essence of leadership is positive Influence.

At its core, positive Influence is about inspiring people to take positive actions...where 'positive actions' means mean actions directed toward desired long-term goals.

In addition to the ability to inspire positive actions, a leader must have a pleasing personality (or at the very least an acceptable personality) in order to inspire other people to be motivated in positive ways...i.e., be motivated to take actions aimed at desired & shared goals. 

Inspiring People and Influencing them to take positive Actions toward desired & shared Goals...toward a shared & vivid Vision.

  • this is the way to grow personal wealth through business
  • this is the work of business Leaders

 

Your power resides in your strengths: easily said, not easily done...and rampantly ignored.

Your power resides in your strengths.

Your power either energizes action or it rests inactive.

Your power is the sum total of your talents, the opportunities you've had to put those talents to work at tasks, your knowledge related to those talents, and the time you've taken to practice and develop work-skills based on those talents.

Your power is put to good use when you employ your strengths through good habits.

Good habits, naturally, take you toward your long-term goals and vision.

And, of course, if you do not have long-term goals and vision then your power rests inactive and your strengths do not realize their potential.

 

 

Bite-sized Success

Most people fail because they quit. Most people quit because they get frustrated. Most people get frustrated because they don't know how to measure success. Most people don't know how to measure success because they never took time to think about how they might be able to accomplish that measurement.

Most people don't break work down into bite-sized tasks which can be measured.

When we break success into bite-sized pieces we can measure it. When we measure actions we can see and celebrate our small successes. When we celebrate small successes we self motivate. When we self motivate we increase our chances of ultimate success.

When we measure them and know our small successes are accumulating we gain confidence.

When we gain confidence we increase the likelihood of ultimate success.

This is the sort of logic that allows us to understand the value embedded in goals, especially when vivid long-term vision is meshed with measurable short-term goals.
