Thought Tweet #918

Thought Tweet #918 Regardless of the situation, you can choose to lead. [Choices are limited: leading, following, perhaps one other thing.]

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Business Contains Only 3 Things: People, Process, & Situations.

Regardless of the situation, you can choose to lead.

If you do not choose to lead then you may choose to follow.

If you do not choose to lead or follow then what are you choosing?

Thinking about situations... before they happen

Few, if any, can predict the future.

Many, if not most, think and act like they can influence the future.

What do you think?

Do you think about situations before they happen?

If you do, are they generally pleasant situations or unpleasant situations?

Either way, what's that tell you?

Either way, do you commit to taking certain actions to do what you can to bring the situation about or do what you can to ensure the situation does not happen?

Do you set goals?

If so, when you set goals do you have certain future situations imaged in your mind's eye?

Do you plan your actions?

If so, when you plan your actions do you have certain future situations imaged in your mind's eye?

Do you try to influence people?

If so, when you try to influence people do you have certain future situations imaged in your mind's eye?

If so, do you wonder what future situations those people have imaged in their minds' eyes?

If so, do you ask those people about their minds' eyes pictures?

If not, how likely is it you will bring about the future situations you imagine?

Thought Tweet #910

Thought Tweet #910 I now know constructive criticism is an oxymoron. So how do you recommend we go about doing performance reviews?

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Do you derive pleasure out of criticizing others? If so, don't read on...

So, you do not derive pleasure out of criticizing others. So, why do you continue to do it? It is never constructive. If you don't believe this ask your boss or your spouse or one of your friends to surprise you when you least expect it with some criticism. When they lay the surprise criticism on you observe how you react...your emotions/feelings/actions.

If that doesn't work ask your boss or your partners to give you some criticism at your next performance review.

Thought Tweet #909 An interview or performance review question: How do you go about expanding your ability to influence people?

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

The Gallup folks have defined 4 Talent Domains for leadership: Executing, Influencing, Relationship Building, & Strategic Thinking.

When we look at local leaders' Talent Themes we notice a lack of Influencing Talent Themes. A lack of Influencing talent & strength is widespread throughout businesses in our geography.

Understanding that, we need to help leaders improve their ability to Influence others.

A good starting point is understanding whether or not they understand the importance of Influence...and are taking steps to improve in the area of Influencing.

A good next step is providing Influencing-help in the form of specialized knowledge, situations/opportunities, and time to practice skills.

Thought Tweet #905 What do you do that other people won't do? [inspired by The Art of Asking Good Questions]

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

'When the going gets tough, the tough get going.'

'Going the extra mile.'

'It's a dirty job but someone has to do it.'

But...

What is it that you do that other people refuse to do?

What's your exclusive territory?

What are you doing when you are standing alone?

When you 'do it' what does 'it' tell other people about you?

When you 'do it' what does 'it' tell you about yourself?

Why do people resist change?

Attitude has a direct impact on success.

Communication has a direct impact on success.

So, attitude and communication together play a major role when it comes to achieving success.

That said, why is it so many people place so little emphasis on improving their attitudes or their communication?

Are people oblivious to the need for change?

Are people too lazy to change?

Do they feel too busy to change?

Do people not believe they can change?

Do people feel doomed to repeat the same errors?

Do people think it's others, not themselves, who must change?

Do people not know how to change?

Do people derive some sort of pleasure or comfort from the status quo?
