Mark Weber visited our Centre For Family Business ... our 2012/2013 kick-off event

As always, Mark educated and energized the 100+ folks who attended CFFB's 2012-2013 kick-off breakfast event.

Mark, a social psychologist, talked about social engineering...he described his "interest in how situations that you find yourself in affect what you perceive, how you think, and what you do".

He went on to talk about the importance of storytelling in business...

"You are part of the definition of the situation."

"You are a storytelling animal."

"It takes a story to really engage people."

Why should business leaders tell stories?

  • people are more emotional than rational
  • people use analogies to make sense of the world
  • people use proxies for analysis of their complex, social worlds [to simplify the world - situations and decisions]
  • people don't pay attention most of the time
Here's an interesting research fact, shared by Mark: If you want to persuade people then speak quickly [not slowly]. People who speak quickly project confidence and signal competence.
 
Here's one of Mark's recommendations: Become a better story listener, ask questions like
  • "Tell me about __________________.",
  • "How did you come to _________________?", and
  • "Did something happen that _________________?"
Characteristics of good stories:
  • memorable
  • build connection between the storyteller and the audience
  • evoke emotions that serve the purpose of the storyteller
  • connect with the core [driving] interests of the audience
In contrast, most business communication is:
  • dry
  • overly complicated
  • more about the speaker than the audience
When you create business stories, be clear about your purpose: after this presentation/story/conversation my audience will ____________________, ____________________, & ___________________.
 
And, before you communicate, think about your audience:
  • how does the audience see themselves?
  • how does the audience see me? [my company? my industry?]
  • how much does the audience know? [on average, speakers tend to overestimate how much the audience knows]
Mark suggested four good story buckets:
  • a time you shone
  • a time you blew it
  • about mentors [humility & gratitude]
  • books, movies, & current events

For some reason, we have an old saying, "Ignorance is bliss." Obviously, that's an exaggeration...or is it?

At the other end of the spectrum, many gurus have taught, "Enlightenment is bliss." I think that may be true...however, not having reached that state I cannot say for sure.

Yes - work is challenging...it tests us, it resists our desires, and it strengthens us. 

And perhaps, as James Allen taught, perfection and work-mastery bring bliss as work-challenges vanish.

When it comes to ego, I believe moderation is the right course.

Eastern philosophies teach the merits of reduction of ego...removal of it to the extent that is possible. [Total removal of ego being a blissful state.]

Western capitalists have illustrated the serious damage caused by high, out-of-control egos.

It seems to me human beings were meant to have egos...why else would virtually all of us [if not all of us] have them? 

But, moderation is required...self-control, that is.

Perhaps, many animals are curious. Certainly, some are...cats have a reputation for it. Human beings must be the most curious animal on Earth. Curiosity is in our DNA. Curiosity is the root of innovation, invention, and creativity.

[I don't think curiosity kills cats...it just makes them very interesting.]

How to get off a Business Roller Coaster

Some people enjoy riding roller coasters. They love the crazy ups and downs. They love the rush of the wind in their faces. They ride the thrill and they step onto solid ground when the roller coaster slows to a halt and the ride is over.

Sometimes business work seems like a roller coaster ride...fast-paced, with ups and downs, with highs and lows, with lots of curves, with some squealing as brakes are put on, and with a few jerks along the way. But business roller coasters differ from those at amusement parks. In business, most times you cannot get off a roller coaster and this is especially true when the roller coaster is speeding, out-of-control, downhill, with sparks flying.

So, how can you get off a business roller coaster when it is out of control?

Let's make the question a little more challenging: How do you get off a business roller coaster when it is out of control and you own it?

Answer:

  1. Change is required...all key people in the business, including the leader, must change. Change starts with one individual then it spreads to others.
  2. Change must be planned...objective 3rd party advice helps.
  3. Change must be gradual...but the change must be ongoing, directed, and evident to all - partners, shareholders, employees, clients, suppliers, business allies, etc.
  4. Change must be discussed...and repeated. Interesting, pertinent, real-life stories help.

When your business is on a roller coaster the best people are looking for a smoother ride.
