Many businesses struggle because…

by Rick Baker
On Mar 15, 2011
1. People do not do the work required to understand themselves or others

Why don’t people do that work?
  • Because we didn’t realize this is important
  • Because we believe we do not have time*
  • Because we assume
  • Because we have not been taught:
    • how to do self-analysis
    • how to listen
    • how to ‘read’ people
  • Because it is hard work

2. People’s Values are in conflict...and often, they never even know it

Why don’t people work to ensure Values are in synch?
  • Because we didn’t realize this is important
  • Because it is personal and can be sensitive territory
  • Because we underestimate the possibility and extent of the differences

3. People do not think accurately before they act

Why do we act without the support of accurate thinking?
  • Because action receives attention and applause
  • Because most education delivered by others is about what we should do and how we should do it
  • But we are rarely, perhaps never, taught how to think accurately

Statistic: people of the U.S.A. watch 100,000,000 hours of TV
…every weekend
…and that’s just the commercials!

Sales Tweet #171

by Rick Baker
On Mar 14, 2011
Sales Tweet #171 Some sales people are like ship captains in the fog...repeatedly blowing their horns.

The Thinking Behind the Sales Tweet
Don’t blow your own horn. That's an old piece of communication wisdom. It appeared in popular-quotes books almost 100 years ago.

Positive Attitude & Genius: definitions

by Rick Baker
On Mar 11, 2011
Positive Attitude means enjoying a predominance of positive emotions and having a predominance of positive thoughts...plus having the ability to replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts.

The Genius possesses the ability to get beyond his/her emotions, regardless of their character, and the ability to remove/minimize mental noise, with the result the genius’ mind is free to fully concentrate under the guidance of a focussed purpose.

Now – can we simplify those definitions?

[Should we?]

OK – we get it – building relationships is a good thing…but How? - Part 1

by Rick Baker
On Mar 10, 2011
This is the first Thought Post in a series about how to go about building relationships.

At the end of the series, I will provide a customized summary…Building Relationships, from A to Z.

This Thought Post introduces the Brafman Brothers, Ori and Rom.

The Brafman Brothers wrote ‘Click - the magic of intimate connections

Brafman Brothers - how to go about building relationships:
  1. Magic matters...many describe the moment that way when they experience an instant or very-quick connection with another person [this will be rare – so, when it happens do not ignore it]
  2. There is power in vulnerability: many people are reluctant to open up...therein lies a key to connection on an emotional level…let down your protective guard
  3. A few feet make a big difference: proximity is important…get close [but not too close]
  4. Resonance begets resonance: (1) flow & presence, (2) flow - the experience of being in the zone, and (3) being fully present helps us create resonance...that draws people to us
  5. Similarity counts...quantity trumps quality...similarity helps create an ‘In Group’ dynamic: focus on the ways you are similar (humour, music, sports, etc.)
  6. The environment can help foster intimacy
  7. Certain people are magnets [I immediately thought about Malcolm Gladwell's ‘Connectors’]
  8. Quickset intimacy can bring out the best in us: the good news is quickset intimacy does not have to be left to chance
