The Thinking Behind The Tweet

If you're struggling with business, take a detailed look - take a detailed look from a fresh, new perspective - at how you deal with People, Processes, & Situations.

When you do this you will discover your Bad Habits, the ones that are at the root of your struggles. When you know these Bad Habits you can remove them and replace them with Good Habits.

Good Habits are the building blocks of trust.

by Rick Baker
On May 1, 2014

When leaders fail at the little details, especially the interpersonal details, trust erodes. And it is tough to rebuild trust. Better to handle the little details well and maintain trust than to ignore the importance of getting the little things right.

Good Habits include doing the little interpersonal things right.

Good Habits are the building blocks of trust.

Big Changes, Difficult Changes...never Impossible Changes

by Rick Baker
On Apr 22, 2014

"It is very difficult to make really big, important, life-changing decisions because we are all susceptible to a formidable array of decision biases. There are more of them than we realize and they come to visit us more often than we'd like to admit."

Dan Ariely

'The Upside of Irrationality' (2010)

While, in relative terms, it is easy to make small, less-important decisions these decisions too are affected by our biases. And these small decisions too can be life changing.

Here's why/how they can be life changing:

The small changes happen bit by bit over time. We have a word for these changes. We call them "habits". Some of them are good; some of them are bad; all of them change our lives by influencing our thoughts & actions and by influencing how we are perceived by others. To the extent the small changes are founded on emotions they contain more lasting power. So, small changes - especially those small changes that grew out of an emotional base - have the ability to influence our thoughts & actions for long periods of time.

Big decisions & small decisions and big changes & small changes: all can contribute in long-lasting ways to develop a person's character. [In fact, when you stop to think about it, what else contributes to the building and maintenance of a person's character?]

Regardless, it is possible for people to make permanent & positive adjustments to their character.

Yes - easy to say, difficult to do...

One simply needs to commit to creating better habits then do the repetition of thought & action required to generate and solidify those better habits.

Good Habits - good working habits - take time to grow and take hold.

Band-aids stop the bleeding when we keep the cuts small enough. And a series of band-aids is better than a series of bleeding cuts.

Better to implement a small, workable Solution now than delay action while waiting for the arrival of a more-complete, proven solution.

People Do Only 3 Things: Good Habits, Bad Habits, & New Things.

If you are doing something and you know it is not working then you have identified a Bad Habit...i.e., a habit that is not taking your closer to your goals. To get on the right track, the track that takes you toward you goals, you can either create the proven Good Habit or you can try a New Thing. If the New Thing works and you repeat doing it then that New Thing becomes your Good Habit. If the New Thing does not work and you have your eyes and ears open to learn from the experience then the New Thing becomes a step toward a Good Habit.
