Thought Tweet #715

Thought Tweet #715 When a combination of skills, goals, & plans is not present, people give up their dreams & hope.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Skills, goals and plans will always be required. Without these basics work is demoralizing and frustrating. Without these basics, unless they have tremendous will, people give up their dreams and hope.

Looking out for #1

by Rick Baker
On Apr 11, 2013

It can be very difficult to take care of oneself...looking out for #1 can be a real chore.

Machiavelli knew this.

Some 500 years ago Machiavelli wrote the facts of it. For all his wisdom, he is now seen by the ‘mob’ as the harbinger of bad things…sinister, the speaker of the unspeakable. But, like most of us, Machiavelli is at best understood just enough to be misunderstood. While he spoke simple, honest, straight-forward realism, his name is now a cliché for the toughness or nastiness of the human condition around strength and power.

It seems to me Machiavelli just wanted to support his homeland. He just wanted to guide those more powerful than he. He just wanted to be factual and ‘pragmatic’ and he just wanted to sell his novel-efficient ideas concerning lordship and power.

He just wanted a piece of the pie.

He wanted to help others make the pie bigger…and he wanted his piece.

But Machiavelli...boy...this guy was weak on sales skill.

He was horrible at it. Not as bad as some of the people who have worked for me, of course, but that’s another story and Machiavelli’s sales skills were awful nonetheless.

Sure, his words have stood the test of 500 years of time. But, at the time when he wrote them, his words were not selling anyone on anything. In fairness to him, there is no question – it was tough to find a good audience for much in the 1500’s.

Yes, Machiavelli was not that successful in his day. And, history and ‘mob’ rote-thinking has not been much kinder to him. Today’s ‘mob’, none of whom I am sure has ever read a word he put to paper, view Machiavelli as the cliché for manipulative skepticism. And, that is a damn shame. After 500 years it is time to cut this guy some slack.  I mean everyone is pretty happy about giving many others credit where credit is due: Galileo, etc.

So, why not cut some slack for Machiavelli?

Thought Tweet #711 Wasted brain-energy and wasted time...we're committed to cutting this scrap by 10% in 30 days!

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Many businesses have scrap-reduction programs; few businesses have programs for reducing the wastage of brain-energy; every business should commit to cutting this scrap by 10% in 30 days!

Thought Tweet #710

Thought Tweet #710 Leaders who cannot see their forest need a good pruning.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Some leaders do not have time to plan. Actually, they DO have enough time...they struggle with how to use time. That is an infectious condition. It tends to spread from the leader to others in the organization. Soon, there's a not-enough-time epidemic throughout the workplace.

Consider the Feeling: 'I do not have enough time.' When you think you do not have enough time, how does that feel? It cannot feel good...can it? Fighting against the clock...all day...every day... That cannot feel good. Throwing up your hands and surrendering to the hands of a clock...and spreading the surrender to others at your workplace. That cannot feel good.

So -

  • Why do so many leaders feel they do not have enough time?
  • When we dig deep, what lies at the root of that problem-tree?
  • Certainly, a good pruning is part of the solution...Don't you agree?

Thought Tweet #709

Thought Tweet #709 To lead, use light fingers at the controls. Heavy-finger governance and control just sends things off kilter.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

From Wikipedia...

In 1868, James Clerk Maxwell wrote a famous paper "On governors” that is widely considered a classic in feedback control theory.

An early governor                              James Clerk Maxwell

In the 19th Century, Maxwell proved that tight governing of steam engine speed created bigger surprises than light governing.

We can apply this fact to 21st Century business process.

In business we need guiding principles and Master Rules.

Thought Tweet #706 Leadership grit grinds & grows.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

John Wayne is one of my heroes. Every time I hear the word 'grit' I think of Rooster Cogburn, the character John Wayne played when he won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in 'True Grit'. More specifically, I think of the scene where he single-handedly took on all the bad guys and won. The above picture shows Rooster charging at the bad guys...guns a blazin'...the perfect hero.

Grit - firmness of mind or spirit : unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger

John Wayne had true grit.

We need more leaders with true grit.
