Communication tip: People want to hear positive messages…so why not deliver positive messages.

by Rick Baker

The Thinking Behind the Tweet

We tested positive and negative marketing messages. We tried both "in these tough economic times" and "to build for the future". We found our positive messages were twice as successful as our negative messages. So we work to keep our communications on the positive side of centre.

Thought Tweet #904

by Rick Baker
On Jan 2, 2014

Thought Tweet #904 Your brand starts with your character and the culture you breed: your brand stalls or flourishes there.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

A brand isn't a cute visual.

A brand isn't a catchy logo or a slick tag line.

A brand cannot pretty up a flawed character or a troubling culture.

When testing new branding, take a step back and look at your personal character and your business culture. Do they pass the litmus test? Do they render an investment in 'branding' worthwhile? Or, do they neuter your branding expenditures?

The Right People On The Bus...a twist on branding

by Rick Baker
On Dec 31, 2013

Consider this.

You are seeking a ride home and you come upon a bus.

The bus looks amazing...modern styling, brilliant paint job, beautiful colours, clean, chrome gleaming, even the tires are showroom-buffed.

You are attracted to this fine-looking bus.

You walk up to this bus and the door automatically opens, beckoning you to climb aboard. And that's what you do. As you climb the steps the first thing you notice is the brightness and then you notice the fresh flowery smell.

You see, the driver is rather occupied...looking down, reading something.

You pay your fare.

You turn to your left.

You see some open seats but that's not what captures your attention. Your attention is fixed on the passengers. Every one of them is an unseemly hobo. And you quickly learn the hobos' language is even rougher than their appearance.

That's when a clear understanding hits you...It really is important to have the right people on the bus!

[You know external messages, like branding, are important. However, their importance shrinks away when you do not have the right people on the bus.]

You make a choice.

You turn around and you exit the bus.

Then you seek a better vehicle to take you where you want to go.

Thought Tweet #730

by Rick Baker
On May 3, 2013

Thought Tweet #730 Social Media provides an excellent opportunity to say what you say instead of do what you do.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Are you hunkering down over anti-social media?

Some thoughts about Fake Work.

...yes...pots do call kettles black.

Thought Tweet #695

by Rick Baker
On Mar 15, 2013

Thought Tweet #695 I'd rather tweet than taste defeat. [Whatever you think, please don't blame #DanPink.]

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Just finished Dan Pink's new book, 'To Sell is Human', (2013).

In the book, Dan talked about the importance of rhyme in marketing...psychologists have proven people deem messages that rhyme to be more believable than messages that do not rhyme. Also, Dan talked about using social media, including Twitter. So, I am working on some rhyme-marketing messages.

Of course I agree To Sell Is Human!...I believe in Marketing!... and I sure want to keep up with Social Media!

So I decided to kill all the birds with one stone and start my marketing-rhyme adventure with 'rhyming tweets about tweets'.

Hence...I'd rather tweet than taste defeat.

And...

I'd rather tweet than feel the heat.

I'd rather tweet than be less sweet.

I'd rather tweet than forecast sleet.

I'd rather tweet than lose my seat.

I'd rather tweet than scratch my seat.

I'd rather tweet than pound the beat.

I'd rather tweet than walk the street.

I'd rather tweet than stub my feet.

I'd rather tweet than sand my feet.

I'd rather tweet than smell your feet.

I think I am getting the hang of this Dan...to sell is human...to rhyme is devine...

I'd rather tweet than cook snake meat.

I'd rather tweet than press a pleat.

I'd rather tweet than shovel peat.

I'd rather tweet than walk in sleet.

I'd rather tweet than iron a sheet.

I'd rather tweet than sink a fleet.

I'd rather tweet than bah or bleat.

I'd rather tweet than watch cows eat.

I'd rather tweet than stroke from heat.

I'd rather tweet than rub your feet.

Definitely feeling good about this new-age social marketing!

I'd rather tweet than give up wheat.

I'd rather tweet than chew a beet.

I'd rather tweet than be discrete.

I'd rather tweet than eat raw meat.

I'd rather tweet than press Delete...

[Oops]
