Thought Tweet #655

Thought Tweet #655 Advancement in science happens when insightful theories test known 'truths'. The same applies in business.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

If the writers of screen and theater plays decide the status quo is good enough and stop coming up with new ways to get our attention and entertain us, few of us will continue to go to the theaters and cinemas.

If scientists decide the status quo is good enough and stop coming up with and experimenting around new theories, few of us will continue to fund scientific research.

If business owners decide the status quo is good enough...

Thought Tweet #654 Commodity + Creativity = not-Commodity

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Less than a generation ago specialized knowledge, alone, could tip the scale in favour of business success. Now, specialized knowledge is nowhere near as special as it used to be. Now, with the press of an 'Enter' button specialized knowledge can be shared broadly and deeply...globally. Now, a business that relies on specialized knowledge to tip the scale in its favour is dreaming. Now, specialized knowledge provides little protection and, at best, short-lived differential advantage. We can no longer protect our commodities with specialized-knowledge bubble wrapper. Those bubbles have burst.

Now, we need to inject our commodities with Creativity

Thought Tweet #653 When your people do routine tasks, do they illustrate the winners' attitude?

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Routine tasks do not have to be de-motivating. Yet, for many people they are just that. Perhaps, we have lost track of the fact that each of the cogs in the wheel is important? Perhaps, too many leaders forget to mention that frequently enough? Perhaps, too many leaders fail to do some of the routine work...seeing themselves above-the-cog... and neutering their ability to lead by positive example?

Thought Tweet #652 Seek the upside in ordinary tasks: seeking simple work and doing it well; knowing its link to positive outcomes.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

As the old saying goes, "There is satisfaction in a job well done."

There is more satisfaction when:

  1. You know the work, even if it is the most-simple of tasks, is a step toward a positive outcome and
  2. You do the work well.
Some people know this.

Others have to learn this.

Some have to teach this.

Leaders illustrate this by example: Mahatma Gandhi took pride in simplicity and practice of walking; Napoleon Bonaparte took pride in the science and practice of aiming cannons.

Thought Tweet #651 Thinking is no substitute for information; information is no substitute for thinking.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Inspired by Edward de Bono who wrote "Thinking is no substitute for information."

And...knowledge is not power.

Information is much more plentiful and accessible that is used to be. Is thinking keeping pace?

Thought Tweet #650

Thought Tweet #650 Focusing on people's strengths helps them feel more engaged & motivated, which leads to increased profit.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

How does that lead to more profit?

If you can help people feel more engaged and motivated about their work, then:

  • they are interested, so they concentrate better and make fewer errors,
  • they are happier and have less interpersonal conflicts,
  • they are happier and there is less staff turnover,
  • they are more able to face challenges and embrace change.
All of these things lead to increased profit.

[and these are just a few examples of how strengths-based business leads to increased profit]
