Thought Tweet #451

Thought Tweet #451 Expanding Good Habits: that is Life's Major Construction.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Our Habits define us. Our Good Habits will be viewed positively by other people...assuming the other people are thoughtful and balanced.

So, for the benefit of other people there is nothing more worthy of construction than Good Habits

And, by definition, Good Habits make us feel good because they align with our Goals.

And finally, Bad Habits make no one feel good; they do the opposite; so, the more they are replaced with Good Habits the better.

Thought Tweet #450 “Self-help has accomplished about all the great things of the world.”

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Recently, I made a rule - not to post any more quotes in my Thought Tweets. However, it wasn't a hard-and-fast rule [like a Master Rule], so, here I am, today, breaking it. I am breaking my no-more-quotes rule because I am impressed by Orison Swett Marden's wisdom. And, this particular quote expresses, in a much better way than I am able to do, a major piece of my life philosophy. This quote is one of 151 quotes I copied from Orison Swett Marden 1911 self-development classic - 'Pushing to the Front'. [I am fortunate to own a first printing of this 2-volume classic.]

Principle-based Leadership

by Rick Baker
On Apr 6, 2012

Many leaders understand the merits of principle-based leadership.

But...what does principle-based leadership mean?

Specifically - what exactly does principle-based leadership mean?

James Allen1 provides most-clear answers to this question.

For example...excerpts of James Allen's wisdom:

The first things in a sound life – and therefore in a truly happy and successful life – are right principles.

The first principles in life are principles of conduct.”

Allen states 5 of them...

Duty “The principle of duty means strict adherence to one’s own business, and just as strict non-interference in the business of others.”

Honesty “It means not cheating or overcharging another. It involves the absence of all trickery, lying and deception of word, look or gesture. It includes sincerity, the saying what you mean and the meaning what you say.”

Economy” “The conservation of one’s financial resources is merely the vestibule leading toward the more spacious chambers of economy. It means, as well, the husbanding of one’s physical vitality and mental resources.”

Liberality: “Liberality follows economy. Only the man of economy can afford to be generous. The spendthrift, whether in money, vitality, or mental energy, wastes so much on his own miserable pleasures as to have none left to bestow upon others.

Self-Control: “Self-control is the last of these five principles, yet it is the most important.”

The five principles are five practices, five avenues to achievement, and five sources of knowledge.”

Tom Deans visits our Centre For Family Business (CFFB)

by Rick Baker
On Apr 5, 2012

"To Gift or Not To Gift", that was the question...at CFFB's March breakfast.

At our breakfast event, Tom Deans explained why gifting a family business is generally not the best course of action. And Grant Robinson, of event sponsor BDO, provided some opposing thoughts...creating a friendly debate on the topic of family-business transition, succession, and exit.

Tom described himself as a contrarian who tends to challenge people. He has owned and operated a family business. And he explained, he sold it at the right time and at the right price. He planned ahead. He spent the better part of 5 years 'working his plan', then he sold his family business.  Tom Deans has entrepreneurship in his blood. His great grandfather ran an East Coast tire distribution business. His grandfather was a chemist, who founded what became a $100,000,000 publicly-traded enterprise. Tom's father created a plastics business, the largest employer in Orangeville.

Tom's ancestors never, ever 'gifted' their businesses...they sold them!

Tom recommended all owners of family businesses consider that option: rather than gift family businesses to relatives, sell the family business. That's the gist of Tom's message to the owners of family businesses. In his book, 'Every Family's Business', Tom provides 12 important questions...designed to help families consider the best course of action for business 'transition or exit'.

Quoting Tom, "I am offering, in a way, permission for business owners to take care of themselves."

Tom understands the feelings of guilt family business owners can experience when they think about selling their businesses. He cautions, those feelings are often followed by business failure. The fact is most family businesses do not survive for generations. For a family business to survive for generations, each generation must sacrifice something...just as the founder did before them. Gifting the business to the next generation often results in business failure and loss of the wealth that existed in the business and the family before the gifting.

Tom explained...

"This issue is very important in Canada because we have never had so many aging business owners."

"Banks are doing due diligence on how well prepared family businesses are for transition."

Summing up Tom Deans' contrarian view, using his words:

  • "A family business is a set of ideas and values that you pass on to your kids."
  • "Pursue the longevity of wealth and family...but not the business itself."
  • "Teach your children to love commerce: to love business...not to love a business."
 Well said Tom!

..and, thank you Grant & BDO for sponsoring this entertaining and educational CFFB event.

Self-confidence sustains. Self-confidence is the catalyst of progress. Self-confidence moves people. Self-confidence constructs. Self-confidence moves the world.

Thought Tweet #448

Thought Tweet #448 Don't let Situations catch you unprepared...anticipate Situations, engage forethought

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

So many people think they are 'too busy' when the reality is they are 'too unprepared'. They live a business life consumed by a repeated series of fire-fights. Many of the fire-fights are directly linked to specific individuals' behaviour. And, habits being what they are, to a very large degree, behaviour is predictable. Think of a probable Situation. Think of who will be in the Situation. Think of how the people in the Situation will act. Plan your best Actions before the fires start.
