Focus on the goal and move beyond the obstacles; Move beyond the obstacles and focus on the goal.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

There's an interesting relationship between goals and problems:

  • if we focus on problems, we can bet side-tracked and stall out before we achieve goals
  • if we focus on goals, we build momentum and confidence...and do a better job tackling problems
When we think beyond problems - when we desire success and focus thought on goals - we have an easier time handling problems.

Problems are inevitable, goals are not.

We can alter our emotions. We can, for example, reduce the emotion of anger from high to low.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

In his 1918 classic, 'The Greatest Thing In The World', Henry Drummond wrote, "Hence it is not enough to deal with Temper. We must go to the source, and change the inmost nature, and the angry humours will die away of themselves.

This is true. It is not easy to do, but it can be done. I know from first-hand experience. We can alter our emotional reactions, at least some of them. If anger is one of our natural emotions, and some of us do tend to be that way, we can take steps, over time, to reduce that natural emotion. We know we have reduced our anger-emotion when we no longer feel the chemicals like adrenalin and cortisol flowing.

Emotions wrap themselves tightly around thoughts about pain from loss...squeezing logic out. Work to loosen their grip.

The emotions and feelings around loss weigh in heavier than the emotions and feelings around gain. Psychologists' experiments confirm we place much higher value on avoiding the pain of loss than we place on obtaining the pleasure of gain.

This defies logic.

But - let's not forget - logic-defiance is the territory of emotions and the feelings they bring

...the parasites live where the great have little secret sores."

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

According to history or legend, when the great Henry Ford was caught in a very compromising situation he said, "Never complain, never explain". We cannot believe everything we read, so - perhaps Henry Ford was never in that compromising situation and even if he was perhaps he never said that never-never quip. And, perhaps Henry Ford was simply making timely use of the wisdom expressed earlier by the great British statesman, Benjamin Disraeli?

Regardless, Disraeli or Ford or both, "Never complain, never explain" makes for an interesting story-example of what makes great men great.

PS: "...the parasites live where the great have little secret sores."

Many people have a negative impression of Friedrich Nietzsche. I'm not one of them. Just after Disraeli's death, when Ford was a young man, Nietzsche wrote those words. ['Thus Spoke Zarathustra'...written in 4 parts, during the 1880's]

It's easy to make a significant change: just tell everyone you have developed an electricity intolerance.

Sure, change is tough.

But you gotta look on the bright side: if you don't like that last suggestion - when the urge to change gets too annoying, you can always watch a TV rerun.

Now, do you see the benefit in the power of positive thinking?
