Thought Tweet #567

by Rick Baker
On Sep 18, 2012

Thought Tweet #567 If you want to get something out of your system, make it productivity.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

I believe it was James Watt who first said, "If you want to blow off steam, put it to work." [I could be wrong about that one.]

Thought Tweet #557

by Rick Baker
On Sep 4, 2012

Thought Tweet #557 Very tough to make good decisions by consensus; very tough to implement good decisions without buy-in.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Best to strive for buy-in...with forethought about implementation. For example, use SMARTACRE Goals

A recruiting test that LASTS

by Rick Baker
On Aug 30, 2012

When you are recruiting senior business people, consider using an approach that can survive the test of time.

An approach that...

...LASTS

LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL: does this person possess the ability or potential to contribute at the leadership team level?

ATTITUDE: does this person have the ability to remain helpful, positive, energetic, & focused under negative situations?

STRENGTHS: does this person possess the talent, knowledge, & skills for the role and its specific tasks?

THINKING POWER: is this person able to think accurately, creatively, strategically, with an open mind, & a solution-orientation?

SELF-CONTROL: is this person able to self-monitor & self-regulate, particularly when situations are stressing and straining?

Some samples of links that will help you create the details of your recruiting program...

LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL Leadership Teamwork

ATTITUDE Attitude Positivity

STRENGTHS Strengths Talents

THINKING POWER Think Thought

SELF-CONTROL Self-Control Self-Monitor

Thought Tweet #544

Thought Tweet #544 About Decisions: as a general rule, avoid making them when you are stressed or pressed

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Only on rare occasions do we need to deliver decisions with urgency. For the vast majority of situations we can take time to de-stress or reduce negative feelings before we make decisions. Given a little time for clear thought we can consider options, we can check our gut, and we can perform common-sense tests. As the saying goes, "If it's worth doing it's worth doing right".

Bad Signals & Signs of Existing and Impending Business Problems

by Rick Baker
On Jul 24, 2012

All businesses experience a series of problems. Solving problems is essentially what business is all about. However, business should not be a strung-out set of stressed-out problem-solving experiences. Business should not be that painful.

When you boil business down you find people.

So, restating the above:

People's jobs and careers should not be struggling, painful experiences dragged out over long periods of time.

People should step back every once in a while and check the health of their job, career, and business.

Does their workday contain any unhealthy symptoms?

As introductory examples, people could check for:

  1. Failure to reply to phone messages and email messages...2 main reasons why this is unhealthy: it closes the door to potential opportunities, especially the value embedded in weak links and it brands you and your company as self-focused....this is especially a problem if you and/or your business are active with other aspects of social media such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and You Tube. [another idea to consider - ] Successful People Have More Time
  2. Stalled Sales...there are root causes. What are they? [an idea to consider]
  3. Chronic errors...there are root causes. What are they? [an idea to consider]
  4. Software or process technologies falling behind [an idea to consider]
  5. Tightening cash flow [an idea to consider]
  6. Increased disharmony among employees [an idea to consider]
  7. Increased turnover [an idea to consider]

Thought Tweet #525

by Rick Baker
On Jul 20, 2012

Thought Tweet #525 Most people tend to express problems in ways that do not reveal the true source of their pain.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

And most people reply to such cries for help with cries for help.

It's all about the huge influence our unconscious brain exerts, as part of the human condition.
