Thought Tweet #838

by Rick Baker
On Oct 2, 2013

Thought Tweet #838 You are not paranoid - people ARE watching you.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

They are watching what you do. They have little ability to understand what you are thinking. Regardless, they are watching what you do.

That makes you a role model.

That provides you an opportunity to lead by example.

Thought Tweet #837.5 Good risk managers are allergic to mediocre leaders [and vice-versa].

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Behind every great leader there is a great risk manager. It has always been that way. Now, more than ever risk management is an essential leadership priority. Risk management is an elite business function, intimately intertwined with strategic thinking.

Thought Tweet #836.5

Thought Tweet #836.5 Are the people who post warning signs pessimists or optimists?

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Some business people treat risk management as if it is just a dirty pair of words. Others treat it like it's the territory of the worst of pessimists.

For me, risk management is a talent - a strength...naturally enjoyed by some of us and very foreign to others. Risk Management is about warning signs. It is about the ability to see risks before they happen and post warning signs about the risks to save others from injury. Business Contains Only 3 Things: People, Process, & Situations. Risk Management is about the risks tied to these 3 things.

Risk Managers may or may not be pessimists.

Risk Managers may or may not be optimists.

Regardless, good Risk Managers must be realists.

Good Risk Managers are 'present' - they see the present reality, both the good pieces of reality and the bad pieces of reality. Their views are not tainted by pressure of the present or the baggage of the past.

Good Risk Managers are 'visionary' - they have a good sense for patterns and trends and they have a good sense about how present patterns and trends can unfold into future situations.

Risk managers deliver value to business processes and other business people. Sometimes, they deliver company-saving value. Risk Managers know much about The School of Hard Knocks and they know how to spare other business people the hardest of business knocks.

Thought Tweet #832.5 Converting challenge into change...isn't that the essence of the leader's role?

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Leaders see challenging situations....political, technological, interpersonal, economic, etc.

Leaders envision and desire change.

Leaders inspire other people to convert challenge into change.

TurnAhead - repairing a damaged business, taking a business to the next level

by Rick Baker
On Sep 18, 2013

Some businesses have slipped away into unprofitable territory.

Some businesses have taken a serious hit and are sinking.

Some business are doing OK, but/and face an opportunity to climb to the next level.

Some of these businesses will gain advantage under a turnaround; all of these businesses will gain advantage under a TurnAhead

What's a TurnAhead?

The first step in a TurnAhead is getting control of Cashflow and tied to this, solidifying Gross Margin. With the 80/20 Rule in mind, what things have the greatest impact on Gross Margin - particularly, what Revenue pieces have the greatest impact on Gross Margin? Focus on those pieces. Solidify them. Expand them. Duplicate them.

This first step involves clear and accurate communication with the most-trusted people available in the organization. This means a series of simple questions followed by simple answers. Questions beyond simple ones are the wrong questions. Answers beyond simple ones are signals of confusion and unhelpful thinking.

The roots of big problems are simple roots.

The keys to big opportunities are simple keys.

The challenge you will always face is: simple does not mean evident or obvious...in foresight. Simple means simple in hindsight and, if you are really skilled, simple means common sense in real-time.

So, when you are working on a TurnAhead:

  • concentrate on trusted people who think accurately,
  • focus on Gross Margin and Cashflow,
  • ask and repeat simple, clear questions, &
  • act only on the simple, clear answers.

Finding & Keeping Top-Notch People - some questions

by Rick Baker
On Sep 16, 2013

Some questions to consider…

  • What’s your most-successful recruiting technique?
  • What 3 words would you use to sum up your best younger person?
  • When it comes to recruiting, what’s changed in the last 10 years?
  • Training leaders & managers: how do you go about that?
  • Do younger people have an attitude of ‘entitlement’?
  • Do you take special actions to take care of your best people? If so, what actions?
  • Can you influence your people’s loyalty? If so, how?
