Thought Tweet #804.5

Thought Tweet #804.5 What is it about Urgency that allows it to beat Importance, time after time?

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

When we face urgent situations they almost always capture our attention and action...even if we know we should be doing more-important things.

Urgency is always hanging around the roots of Bad Habits

Thought Tweet #803.5 I'm sure that slow-boiling the frog doesn't work. Business gurus got to stop feeding that nasty rumour.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Here's the Wikipedia introduction: "The boiling frog story is a widespread anecdote describing a frog slowly being boiled alive. The premise is that if a frog is placed in boiling water, it will jump out, but if it is placed in cold water that is slowly heated, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death. The story is often used as a metaphor for the inability or unwillingness of people to react to significant changes that occur gradually."

What a bunch of hogwash thinking!

Business gurus should place disclaimers on their snake-oil metaphors.

Thought Tweet #803 It takes two to tug-of-war...unless, of course, you choose to battle people in your head.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

It takes two to tango; it takes two to tangle; it takes two to tug-of-war.

And, more often than not, the two must bring an excess of emotion to escalate the situation.

***

Sometimes it only takes one to tango, tangle, or tug-of-war. We all are quite capable of dancing with and fighting with imaginary foes in our heads.

Thought Tweet #802.5 We have a choice: multi-task for mediocrity or focus for excellence.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Brain experts are telling us: The uptrend in multi-tasking, especially multi-tasking involving high-tech communication devices, is changing neural patterns strengthening some paths and weakening others. The neural paths that allow us to talk on the cell phone while surfing the web or creating s spreadsheet are strengthening while the neural paths that allow us to focus and concentrate are taking a back seat.

As this trend continues huge numbers of human beings will be able to do huge amounts of mediocre stuff.

We have a choice: we can choose to multi-task our way to mediocrity or we can focus & concentrate for work-performance excellence.

Put another way: we can choose to multi-task or we can choose to task-multi. [And major success only happens when w choose the latter.]

Thought Tweet #802 Loose lips sink ships. Loose cannons sink 'em too.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Loose Cannons Fire At Will...and they fire at pretty much everyone else within earshot and nearshot. Loose cannons get unhinged before you can blink and they blast-fire with little or no warning. Sometimes their pins slip and they tilt and blow the planks right from under your feet...leaving you with nothing to stand on. And, sometimes, after repetitive volleys they cause your ship to list, take on water, and maybe even sink.

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for loose cannons. When you hear them rumbling around and exploding, take corrective measures...for the sake of ship safety and security.

Thought Tweet #801.5 People self-motivate when you provide situations that combine structure with ability to be creative.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Situation of pure structure don't promote motivation; situations devoid of structure promote unfocused motivation; situations can be constructed to uncrush creativity.

Well-designed process can co-exist with creativity: well-designed process can breed creativity.

Business Contains Only 3 Things: People, Process, & Situations

Spirited Leaders design situations, providing the opportunity to maximize self-motivation. Designing situations: that's the path to motivated work performance.
