Cavemen: another tribute

by Rick Baker
On Jul 12, 2013

Cavemen had it tough.

Yes, I know some are trying to make it look like cavemen had it cushy.

Don`t believe it.

Cavemen had it tough.

When major problems arose they had to pull up their big-boy loin cloths and face the challenges.

Cavemen faced a simple choice: meet the challenge or lose...and often losing meant death.

Imagine how tough it must have been to watch your next-door cave-neighbour do things better than you...hunt better than you, gather better than you, build a better fire...let alone have a more elegant and ergonomic cave. How tough was that on the lizard brain?

So, if you believe in the 'theory of evolution', take comfort in the amazing genes that survived all those challenges and lived long enough to create you. You are made of good resilient stuff.

If you don't believe in the 'theory of evolution', take comfort in knowing it could be worse. You don't have to live in a cold, dark cave. And, Mother Nature outside your home and around your office ain't gonna eat you. If not evolution, at least time has blessed you.

PS: Either way it seems to me we owe a debt to those cave-people who walked this planet before us. They paved the path in so many ways. And, they did it the good-old-fashioned way - without designer shoes. Head-to-toe hardship...literally. Amazing!

PPS: When I used the word 'literally' above I was not trying to imply cave-people were particularly literate. I mean - that sort of thinking is not etched in stone.

Thought Tweet #780.5

by Rick Baker
On Jul 12, 2013

Thought Tweet #780.5 Grow your business by (A) Watching more Reality TV...say those alligator hunters or (B) Learning how to make changes.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

I suppose I have a bit of a problem with Reality TV.

It seems to me all the episodes about alligator hunters, child models, cake makers, pawn brokers, storage closet people, and garbage pickers are diluting rather than adding to reality.

Thought Tweet #780 Beware those vagrant thoughts. [Unless, of course, you want to waste a lot of time.]

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Vagrant thoughts find their home in the endless mental chatter that flows through our minds.

Vagrant thoughts make up much of our mental chatter.

Some of our thoughts meet the criteria for statutory vagrancy - they are intentionally unproductive and [call it] allergic to gainful employment.

Yet, somehow, vagrant thoughts manage to camp out in our minds. They take centre stage when we pay attention to them. They swell when we feed them. They are super-contagious, even able to infect and sour our attitude toward others and life.

Yes, vagrant thoughts are super-powerful. As one example, vagrant thoughts overrule our common sense and convince us we can read other people's minds and motives while, at the same time, they confuse us about our own minds and motives.

Vagrant thoughts confound.

Beware those vagrant thoughts.

Thought Tweet #779.5

by Rick Baker
On Jul 11, 2013

Thought Tweet #779.5 Zero in on your talented people...and construct tasks around them.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

You can take talent to task.

and

You can bring tasks to talent.

Or...you can ignore talents & tasks at your peril.

It's all a matter of choice.

Thought Tweet #779

by Rick Baker
On Jul 11, 2013

Thought Tweet #779 Be self-conscious. Be very self-conscious. And be positive about it.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

We have been taught and conditioned to think of 'self-conscious' people as timid people, people who cower under negative self-images.

Let's give this another think.

Better still; let's replace that first-thought with a constructive thought.

Self-conscious is a good thing:

  • It means the person has given some thought to self...thinking about self is an important thing to do.
  • It means the person is aware of self...self-awareness is a valuable commodity.

Self-awareness, like any other skill, takes practice. That practice should be done with an open mind.

Let's stop assuming self-conscious thought and awareness is only directed toward the negatives.

Let's assume that self-conscious thought will result in finding positive things like talent, courage, confidence, conviction, & creativity.

Put another way - "I was thinking and feeling rather self-conscious the other day. Wow, was I ever proud of myself!"

Habits. What are they anyhow?

by Rick Baker
On Jul 11, 2013

What is a Habit?

A Habit is a repeated behaviour...a repeated action.

Habits fall under the influence of the subconscious part of our minds. Habits are either fully under the influence of the subconscious mind or for the most part under the influence of the subconscious mind.

Yes - we weigh Habits with conscious thoughts. But, we do Habits because of subconscious influences.

As an example, breathing is a Habit. It happens under the influence of the subconscious mind. Yes - we can think about how we breathe and we can decide to hold our breath. To that extent, our conscious mind can influence breathing. However, the influence of the conscious mind is short-lived. After holding our breath for a period of time we either give up and breathe or we pass out. Either way, the subconscious mind has taken over and it causes us to breathe again.

With respect to Habits, the conscious mind is much weaker than the subconscious mind.

However, there is some good news: we have the ability to use conscious thought to impress change on the subconscious influences and, with skilled practice, over time, the conscious mind can exert its will on the subconscious mind and change Habits. For example, the current world record for holding one's breath under water is currently over 22 minutes! Over time, with practice, meditation can help the conscious mind exert control over the subconscious. For example, meditating gurus can slow their heart rates to extremely low levels.

Those are examples of ways to change Habits. They can be used to change Habits from Bad to Good...i.e., changing for the better.

The process for changing Habits is challenging - it is a battle that pits conscious will for long-term gain and doing the right things against near-term gratification.

For Spirited Leaders, Good Habits are actions that help us achieve our long-term goals [including living up to our personal values and standards of character] while Bad Habits are actions that do not help us achieve our long-term goals. So, stated another way, it is a battle that pits a conscious effort to do better actions against subconscious urges to do worse actions.
