BUSINESS CONTAINS ONLY 3 THINGS:

by Rick Baker
On Aug 25, 2011
PEOPLE, PROCESS, & SITUATIONS

Focus your strengths on people and situations.

You can simplify your approach to business by accepting the conclusion – business contains only 3 things: people, process, and situations. When you create this short list it increases the likelihood you will give people and situations the attention they deserve…and must have…if you are to excel as a leader.

How often do you get annoyed at people who offer sincere attention and service to you?

Think back to the early years of your career. Does one of your first bosses glow in your mind?

What causes that glow in your memory…
  • A bit of praise: perhaps, you were brought front and center to receive it?
  • Some helpful words, when you needed to hear them most?
  • Rolling up sleeves together, all hands on deck to tackle a tough job?
  • A joke, where the boss smiled as broadly as the rest of the group?
  • A listening pair of ears, when you needed to blow off some steam?
These are the glowing memories of the things bosses and mentors did for me…and I will never forget.

It is your time to create such memories.

Sales Tweets #289

by Rick Baker
On Aug 25, 2011
Sales Tweet #289 The Boss had a horrible nightmare last night. The Boss was in San Francisco and the earth began to shake.

The Thinking Behind the Sales Tweet
In the weird dream, The New Guy was with The Boss like they were friends or something. It was a nightmare! The earth kept shaking and The New Guy kept talking about the fault lines that cause the problem. The New Guy asked The Boss if he had ever seen a fault up close. The Boss confirmed he had not. Then The New Guy handed him a mirror. That's when The Boss woke up in a cold sweat.

Work: Do You Feel Good About It? - #1

by Rick Baker
On Aug 24, 2011
Some successful leaders favour a fun, kind, and calm work environment.

U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower said:

“A sense of humor is part of the art of leadership, of getting along with people, of getting things done”.

Some successful leaders favour a serious, hard-driving, and formal work environment. Henry Ford comes to mind. Some claim Henry Ford fired people for smiling during working hours.

The important thing: your work environment must align with your personal values and your personality. Otherwise, sooner or later, you will lose patience and enthusiasm. With the loss of patience and enthusiasm…it will be tough to enjoy your work. In simple words: you will feel bad about work. That will remove the possibility of major business success. To make matters worse, it will cause dysfunction to grow and spread. Stresses will erupt. Attitudes and behaviours will become troubling, quite uncomfortable, and possibly even vicious.

You want none of these things.

Right!

You want your people to co-operate with one another and get along.

Right!

You want to enjoy your workday.

Right!

So, what do you need to do to bring that about and make sure it remains?

Let’s start with a seek simple thought: people only have two types of emotions/feelings.
  1. Some emotions cause people to feel good
  2. Some emotions cause people to feel bad
Yes, some emotions such as utter bliss or supreme joy make us feel much better than other emotions such as mildly amused and pleased. Similarly, feeling enraged is more extreme than feeling impatient or annoyed.

You can make your interpersonal activities simpler and more effective if you can accurately identify good feelings from bad feelings. That’s an achievement. For the most part, it doesn’t matter how extreme the feelings are. It is the direction of the feelings that counts the most. Are they ‘good’ or ‘bad’?

Let’s be honest about our ability to read other people’s feelings.

When it comes to understanding other people’s feelings many of us are not very skilled. We struggle with understanding our own feelings let alone understanding other people’s feelings.

So let’s start by looking at feelings only 2 ways: feelings are either (1) Good or (2) Bad.

Sales Tweet #288 Failing is OK. Figuring out how it happened is better.

The Thinking Behind the Sales Tweet
We hear recommendations like, ‘fail often and fail quickly’. The point being: do not expect perfection. Some say, if you succeed 51% of the time then you will ultimately be a winner. Regardless of the statistics on the right balance between successes and failure, there is no question – failing can be very educational. But, you only receive education when you are willing to learn and you take the time to learn.

About Master Mind Alliances

by Rick Baker
On Aug 23, 2011
Napoleon Hill taught us the immense value contained in a Master Mind alliance. When two or more people apply their minds, in harmony, toward a shared goal they create an incremental 'force' that otherwise would never exist. The 'whole' is greater than the 'sum of the parts'. Truly successful business leaders know this to be true. They have lived the Master Mind experience and enjoyed the experience. They notice its absence when it fades...and even though it takes a tremendous amount of work to lead a Master Mind they crave its return.

We have seen Master Minds do tremendous good.

We have seen Master Minds do tremendous business. It’s all about people and how they can become inspired to desire and take desired action.

Your Master Mind can do tremendous business too.

We offer suggestions to help you with that.

First, you must create it…perhaps you will have to start with just two people…you, the leader, and one follower.

That’s not just OK: it is the best way to start.

Interpersonal harmony and like-mindedness are essential to building and growing a successful Master Mind Alliance.

The steps are:
  • Determine the business you want to build
  • Select one or more followers…people who align with your values, vision, major rules, and goals
  • Ensure a meeting of the minds…on personal values, shared vision, major rules, and goals
  • Work together to create plans
  • Work in harmony
  • Never criticize
  • Meet frequently and make adjustments to plans
  • Praise successful action
  • Praise desired results
  • Learn from failures, but don’t dwell on them
  • Praise lessons learned
  • Enforce the major rules, which we call Master Rules
  • Pre-pave the paths
This is a lot of work.

If done properly, it is very pleasant and very fulfilling work.

Sales Tweet #287 At last week’s sales meeting, The Boss had a Freudian slip…

The Thinking Behind the Sales Tweet
The Boss said to Ernest Seller, "Ernest, you just gotta face the facts". What he meant to say was, "Ernest, you just gotta face a firing squad". I guess The Boss is under a lot of stress again.
