Feel Better – Inspire People – Grow Profits

by Rick Baker

Business Leader

How do you feel?

We have found: if you generally feel good then you have a greater chance to inspire followers and you have a greater chance to achieve the business profits you desire.

Feel Better – Inspire People – Grow Profits

The first step – measure your feelings.

How?

We recommend leaders use a Minus10-to-Plus10 Scale, where:
  • A Score of Minus10 means I feel absolutely horrible, couldn’t be feeling any worse than this
  • A Score of means I don’t register any good feelings or bad feelings
  • A Score of Plus10 means I am absolutely ecstatic, never been more pumped up in my life
People will score their feelings higher some days. Some activities will receive higher scores than others. Some situations will cause the score to rise. Some situations will cause the score to drop. When situations change the score could change radically…for example, consider the impact of surprises…pleasant surprises tend to generate good/positive feelings, not-so-pleasant surprises tend to generate bad/negative feelings.

No business leader scores Plus10 all day long. Rather, under normal business situations, leaders’ feelings fluctuate between a high and a low. And, over time their feelings fluctuate above and below their average score. Leaders who are truly happy sorts tend to feel better about almost everything they experience during their workdays. So, their average scores are high. They might assess themselves at an average score of Plus8.

Stress tends to reduce scores.

When leaders experience sustained high-stress levels their scores can drop significantly….and remain low, perhaps even in Minus territory.

When a leader’s score drops the leader becomes less productive and frequently this is clearly evident to the leader’s people, clients, suppliers, and business allies. That has a negative impact on business. And, that has a negative impact on business profitability.

Our goal is: to help business leaders feel even better.

Sales Tweets #282

Sales Tweet #282 Client: Can I have this or that or some other thing. Ernest Seller: What do you mean?

The Thinking Behind the Sales Tweet
When Ernest Seller asks "What do you mean?" it can stop Clients dead in their tracks. They have to think about what happens next. Is Ernest not listening? Is Ernest a little short upstairs? Is Ernest trying to play a joke on me? Sometimes the Clients repeat themselves. And Ernest does the same. It slows the Clients down even more. But you want to know a funny thing...every once in a while, as the Clients are trying to explain themselves to Ernest they talk themselves into making a purchase.

Sales Tweet #281

by Rick Baker

Sales Tweet #281 English proverb: If two ride a horse, one must ride behind.

The Thinking Behind the Sales Tweet
But, “If the world were a logical place, men would ride side-saddle.” [Rita Mae Brown]…in which case, “If two ride a horse, they are side-by-side.” But…maybe that’s only from the rider’s perspective…or riders’ perspectives. The horse and most outsiders would agree…”If two ride a horse, one must ride behind.” Remember that when you are a boss, a subordinate or a partner in business.

Sales Tweet #280

Sales Tweet #280 If your girlfriend laughs at your tie, don't take it personally. Find another tie or find another girlfriend.

The Thinking Behind the Sales Tweet
Remember that quote from Marilyn Vos Savant? [see the Thoughts Behind Sales Tweet #279] Anyhow, I wanted to clear any confusion about Ernest: he didn't find another tie, he was perfectly happy with the one he was wearing!

CONFIDENCE IS KEY

by Rick Baker
On Aug 11, 2011
Self-Confidence is the 1st accomplishment.

I have often told the story of Alexander the Great who eased his commanders’ fears and inspired his army by telling them they were guaranteed to win because they had one thing the enemy lacked. When his followers asked them about the one thing that would guarantee victory, Alexander the Great answered, “We have me.”

Now, to be clear, when I tell that story I make sure to mention I have no way of knowing if this is just legend, let alone the exact words used by Alexander the Great. However, the history books confirm his father was a warrior-king and Alexander was private schooled by Aristotle. Alexander was a young fellow at the time he became ruler. Think about people today who become famous at a young age. If we compare Alexander the Great to the rock stars of today, he would be at least a stage full of them. If compared to the business leaders of today, he would be at least the Chairman of the Board of at least a few upstart car makers, oil producers, and technology disruptors.

So, some 2300 years ago we had this young Alexander fellow with a huge amount of fame and absolute power. Perhaps, it could have gone to his head just a little bit. Perhaps, he did say things like “We’re gonna win because we got me”.

On a much lesser scale, of course, I have made similar claims. I have seen myself as the best person to do the job at hand.

Isn’t that a big piece of the definition of entrepreneur?

Entrepreneurs and leaders need to be the difference makers…isn’t that right?

A leader must be confident about his ability to succeed…right?

A leader must be confident about her ability to succeed…right?

None of us wants to follow an unconfident leader.

None of us wants to be an unconfident leader.

Some of us feel confidence is near or at the top of the list of leadership attributes.

To be crystal clear: I think self-confidence is very, very close to the top of that list.

Sales Tweet #279

by Rick Baker

Sales Tweet #279 I bet you've asked yourself...what do Ernest Seller and Katharine Hepburn have in common? ...

The Thinking Behind the Sales Tweet
The answer is hinted at in this quote by the great actress: "If you always do what interests you, at least one person is pleased". Ernest does this without thinking, that’s why he's such a happy guy. While Ernest might not understand them, the following quotes cover a bit of my perception of Ernest… but this is my perception of the fellow… Leo Rosten: If you're doing something wrong, at least enjoy it… Marilyn Vos Savant: If your employer criticizes your report, don't take it personally. Instead, find out what's needed and fix it. If your girlfriend laughs at your tie, don't take it personally. Find another tie or find another girlfriend.
