People Want To Do Good Work

by Rick Baker
On Aug 29, 2013

For some reason, people want to learn and people want to do good work.

The drive to learn is evident in our infancy. We see it in the seeking eyes of newborn babies. The drive to do good work is intimately tied to a need for approval. We see that in developing children. They do their best to do tasks in order to receive the approval of their parents, then authority figures, then peers.

Those intrinsic drives to do good work stay with us though our lives. People are intrinsically driven to learn and do good work. Their intrinsic drive should not be questioned, regardless of their performance.

If a person's performance does not illustrate learning or good work then do not conclude that person does not want to learn or want to do good work. Rather, conclude the person (1) has, for one reason or another, suppressed his or her drive to learn and do good work or (2) the person simply does not 'know how'.

People want to learn but often nobody has taught them the specific things they require to do good work.

Above all else, great leaders are great teachers.

Great leaders cannot teach everything. Great leaders always have great weaknesses. They must not teach in areas where they have weakness. They must teach in areas where they have strength. In their areas of strength, great leaders are great teachers.

Thought Tweet #813

Thought Tweet #813 Accountability: How much? How often? On a 1-to-10 scale, how do you rate your average accountability at work items?

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

How often do you feel accountable for work items?

Once a year, say, when they sit you down for a performance review?

Once a month?

When you attend one of those monthly team meetings?

Once a week?

Because of those weekly team meetings?

Once a day?

All workday?

7/24...dammit, I own a business!

Thought Tweet #811.5

Thought Tweet #811.5 One bad apple doesn't have to spoil the whole bunch...don't let your views be soured by other people's actions.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

We tend to judge others by their actions; we tend to judge ourselves by our intentions.

We tend to blame situations for our failures: we tend to blame other people for their failures. We tend to give credit to ourselves when we succeed: we tend to give credit to situations when other people succeed. (Attribution Bias)

Thought Tweet #806.5 Misery enjoys company...as long as that company is in agreement...Misery is selective.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Misery enjoys similarly-afflicted company.

Thought Tweet #799

Thought Tweet #799 Suggestions for Leaders: How to make sure your confidence does not threaten your followers.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Some followers are intimidated by Leader's self-confidence. Here are some Spirited suggestions, to make sure you do not come across that way:

  • Be authentic…it is OK to be on the reserved side of centre if that is your character…it is OK to be on the boisterous side if that is your character
  • Be committed to working on self-improvement…i.e., raising his or her own self-confidence when that is required, as it will be from time to time
  • Focus on strengths: personal strengths and the strengths possessed by others
  • As Dale Carnegie taught, Praise heartily
  • Make full and appropriate use of humour…some leaders have just a little of it and will need to remind themselves of the importance of putting it to good use…other leaders have heavy doses of it and they will need to remind themselves to never let it go too far…self-humour is best…humour at the expense of others is an absolute no-no
  • Listen…resurrect that art if it has become lost
  • Master your emotions…and keep them under control [most of the time]
  • Live with Integrity…as defined here

Thought Tweet #797

Thought Tweet #797 Think back to the early years of your career. Does one of your first bosses glow fondly in your mind?

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

What causes that fond glow in your memory…

·         A bit of praise: perhaps, you were brought front and centre to receive it?

·         Some helpful words, when you needed to hear them most?

·         Rolling up sleeves together, all hands on deck to tackle a tough job?

·         A joke, where the boss smiled as broadly as the rest of the group?

·         A listening pair of ears, when you needed to blow off some steam?

These are the glowing memories of the things bosses and mentors did for me…and I will never forget.

It is your time to create such memories.
