Thought Tweet #807

by Rick Baker

Thought Tweet #807 What's become of our leaders? And, isn't it time to make a deference?

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

I believe there was a time when it was common for leaders to be on the first horse, leading the charge.

I believe there was a time when it was common for leaders to be considered noble.

I believe people yearn for a deference.

I believe leaders will see the value in earning a deference.

Thought Tweet #797

by Rick Baker
On Aug 6, 2013

Thought Tweet #797 Think back to the early years of your career. Does one of your first bosses glow fondly in your mind?

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

What causes that fond glow in your memory…

·         A bit of praise: perhaps, you were brought front and centre to receive it?

·         Some helpful words, when you needed to hear them most?

·         Rolling up sleeves together, all hands on deck to tackle a tough job?

·         A joke, where the boss smiled as broadly as the rest of the group?

·         A listening pair of ears, when you needed to blow off some steam?

These are the glowing memories of the things bosses and mentors did for me…and I will never forget.

It is your time to create such memories.

Teaching & Learning: Noble & Wicked Ways

by Rick Baker

Who needs to learn?

Who do you think is in most need of learning...You? Others?

Who is going to do the teaching...You? Others?

How will the teaching and learning be done...In a noble way? In a wicked way? Perhaps you do not know. Perhaps the teaching and learning ways will be left to chance? Perhaps, they will just happen

People want to do better: people want to improve and make meaningful contributions.

Some take time to accept that statement; others know it but forget it from time to time.

Thought Tweet #794.5

Thought Tweet #794.5 What skill comes first: (1) you using your time productively or (2) you helping someone else use his time productively?

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Watch what they do, not what they say.

Do what I say, not what I do.

Physician, heal thyself.

Did our ancestors have thicker skin?

by Rick Baker
On Aug 1, 2013

Our skin is about a millimetre thick.

That's thick enough to protect our soft and vulnerable internal things from most damage.

Yet, far too often, it is not thick enough to protect our soft and vulnerable egos. Somehow, the opinions of others can pierce our thin skin, offend our egos, and distract, dampen, and damage our spirits.

Why does this happen?

How does this happen?

Has this always been the case?

Or -

Did our ancestors have thicker skin?

Did our ancestors view criticism as a noble form of communication? Was there a time when many people, perhaps even whole tribes or communities, had skin that thick?

If so, what happened?

How did people's skin become thinner?

Is it the larger the community the thinner the skin?

Is it the more-advanced the civilization the thinner the skin?

Is it the more the possessions the less the skin?

The more the stuff the less the skin?

And -

Why don't more people take the time to do some self-analysis, obtain some help, and thicken up their skin?

Do people see thin skin as an inevitable part of their destiny...pre-determined, evolution-engineered?

Do they blame their parents, their grandparents, their great-grandparents and so on?

Or -

Do they wonder - Did our ancestors have thicker skin?

Thought Tweet #790.5 Do you test your Decisions against the Values you hold?

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

You will find decision-making becomes easier and 'less conflicted' when you develop the habit of testing your decisions against your personal values.

Other people will find it easier to understand you and your decisions if they perceive alignment between your decisions and your values...that is, the values you express, which are consistent with the character you exhibit.
