Thought Tweet #632

by Rick Baker
On Dec 18, 2012

Thought Tweet #632 When people are annoyed by the pressure of setting goals, don't fight against the flow - help them make predictions.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Some people, perhaps many people, are annoyed by the pressure of setting goals. Many people, if not most people, love to learn about and make predictions. There is little to be gained by fighting against the flow. Rather than fighting against the flow, [at least to some degree] Leaders and managers can seek middle ground and help their people make predictions.

People love to make predictions...and People will embrace the predictions they make.

Examples of predictions people love to make and learn about:

  • bets on sports games
  • weather predictions, especially "Ground Hog Day"
  • stock market investments
  • Nostradamus predictions
Why not add business predictions to the list!

So you think you have INSIGHT...

by Rick Baker
On Dec 18, 2012

Entrepreneurs have deal-doing insight.

Good salespeople have deal-doing Insight, which can be defined as:

  • a natural, deep capacity to understand people and situations,
  • a tuned intuition that identifies patterns & trends, and
  • an ability to see gaps and know ways to fill them.

True entrepreneurs and salespeople possess a set of natural talents that work together to create insight strength.

As one example:

Consider Ideation and Intellection...the ability to imagine ideas and the ability to think about and understand ideas. These are two distinct aspects of Talent: that is, to a degree they can be viewed as distinct. Ideation and Intellection are 'intertwined'. Many people tend to be 'set' in one mode or the other. As a result - few people possess the ability to shut off Intellection in order to free up Ideation. Few people possess the ability to set aside judgment and replace it with open-mindedness or free-flowing creativity. Indeed, very few people can switch back and forth between Ideation and Intellection. Most people get stuck in thought ruts...thought habits.

Q: Can a person develop Insight Strength?

A: Absolutely - Yes!

Here's a great way to start - read some of Edward de Bono's work.

Applaud curiosity.

Spend more time with inwords.

Remember - deal-doing insight can be converted into fortunes.

Thought Tweet #631

Thought Tweet #631 Business Leaders must help people handle the Information Free-For-All and the Attention Free-For-None situation.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Information Free-For-All

The Pros include:

  • the creation of Wikipedia, by volunteers contributing over more than 100,000,000 hours of information entry,
  • real-time access to worldwide information,
  • fantastic education and entertainment in a small smart phone...or an even smaller device if you wish
  • the ability to connect 7/24/anywhere
  • ever-increasing and improving measurement capabilities

The Con is Attention Free-For-None.

Thought Tweet #630

Thought Tweet #630 With the pressing of all those buttons, the 30-Second Elevator Speech is going down.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

As you no doubt have noticed, there's been quite a bit of growth in the area of social media. This is impacting on good-old-fashioned sales work. The sales gurus are now recommending a 17 or 18 second Elevator Speech [AKA - 30-Second Commercial...or, should I say 17- or 18-Second Commercial?].

I favour shrinking the Elevator Speech to zero and, if and when the time is right to sense & catch attention, using words less canned and more natural.

Thought Tweet #629

by Rick Baker
On Dec 13, 2012

Thought Tweet #629 When business leaders express their difficulties, we should listen well before we attempt to suggest solutions.

The Thinking Behind The Tweet

Often, when business leaders express difficulties we either:

  • wave them off and change the topic,
  • reply with a difficulty of their own, or
  • reply with a quick and concrete piece of solution-advice.

These 3 reactions provide little if any value to the business leader [or to us].

If we want to help business leaders then we need to change the way we react/reply when we hear them express their difficulties. We need to listen better. We need to do our best to get into their shoes. We need to think, coming at the difficulty from different directions/perspectives. We need to do these things to (1) improve the quality of our response and (2) build trust with the leader.

When these things are done, then we can help with solutions.
