The Value of Good Behaviour

As we work to add sales revenue and control operating costs, we will do better when we also work to improve people’s behaviour.
 
The more clearly we understand the basics of human nature the bigger our bottom line.
 
Some months ago, one of our Thought Posts touched on the economic Value of Trust.
 
This Thought Post provides a similar message about appropriate [or better] behaviour.
 
Positive & constructive behaviours generate profit.
 
It sounds simple enough…if people respect one another and their actions illustrate consideration then the workplace will be harmonious. And, harmony is one key to achievement1. Harmony is particularly important at the Leadership Team level, where leading-by-example originates.
 
Key message: the business Leader and the Leadership Team must define the behaviour they desire. They must build a Culture for good behaviour2. They must illustrate that behaviour as they go about their day-to-day work3. They must reward others for behaving properly.
 
Another way of looking at this…
 
Bad behaviour is expensive and incivility damages businesses.
 
Major corporations are beginning to recognize this fact and they are taking action to ensure ‘good behaviour’4.
 
Smaller businesses can make quick changes and realize immediate bottom-line gains.
 
PS: we could have called this Thought Post The Cost of Bad Behaviour [like the book at Footnote 4, below]. We remember the results of our marketing test: in our geography positive messages yield twice the results of negative messages5...so; we called this Thought Post The Value of Good Behaviour.

You probably remember Ernest Seller’s best Client, Mr. Kaye. Well, Mr. Kaye does not own a wallet. The fact is nobody has ever seen Mr. Kaye's wallet and, for decades, salespeople, young and old alike, alone and in small gangs, have tried, with zero success, to break Kaye's perfect record of unpaid lunches...more on that later. For the time being, suffice it to say - Mr. Kaye holds the Guinness Book of Records accolade for unpaid lunches.

About Relevant Brands

Many of us spend a lot of time thinking about Business Development.
 
We think about Marketing & Sales, we think about Communication, and we think about Branding.
 
We know business-development things that are working.
 
We know things that worked at one time but no longer work now.
 
We keep our eyes open for thoughts and ideas on how we can improve what we are doing.
 
Here is something I read recently about branding1
 
 “Relevant brands understand certain principles:
  • Insight. Relevant brands care about what we actually do, not just what we think2.
  • Innovation. Relevant brands know the difference between what is purely remarkable and what actually works.
  • Investment. Relevant brands understand the imperative of sparing no expense when it comes to satisfying our needs.
  • Design. Relevant brands live and breathe simplicity3.
  • Experience. Relevant brands realize that it is more important to touch us in real life than on television.
  • Value. Relevant brands are more than worth every penny4.

Sales Tweet #113 Ernest Seller froze his hands last night, putting up the Christmas lights.
 
The Thinking Behind the Sales Tweet
Frozen hands…well that’s a heck of an improvement over December 22nd last year. Last year, December 22nd, when Ernest Seller was out there in the howling wind and blinding snow putting up the lights he noticed his canoe had escaped its moorings and found its way to the neighbour’s front garden. Ernest snuck over to check it out and discovered his canoe was full of ice and snow…weighing about a thousand pounds. But, as you know, Ernest is no quitter. He hacked at ice and snow. He tugged and pulled at the canoe until, finally, it became free from its garden snowdrift. Unfortunately, when Ernest tried to turn the canoe over to empty it he slid underneath it and trapped one of his legs. It truly was a near-death experience. Ernest’s feeble moans and screams went unheard as he lay trapped in his neighbour’s garden, craning his neck so he could peer through their front window and watch them sipping cups of holiday cheer, by their cosy fireplace, enjoying all that wonderful Christmas music. When Ernest finally freed himself…well…let’s just sum it up by saying the Seller family went without Christmas lights last year.

Keep an eye on your Human Resource gaps

Business is about People, Process, & Situations.
 
Since People create the Process and the vast majority of the Situations…
 
business is about People.
 
That sounds too basic to be of much value.
 
That last point would be true if the People aspects of business received due consideration all, or at least most, of the time.
 
That is not the case.
 
Frequently, people feel they are caught up in the hectic pace of business. They feel so caught up they forget to give enough consideration to the People aspects of business. Many businesses, particularly smaller businesses, have no Human Resource Dept. Considering the large number of smaller businesses; the majority of businesses have no skilled Human Resource personnel.
 
So - many businesses handle their Human Resource issues in an unplanned, reactive way.
 
Simple Human Resource steps can be taken to cover the People aspects of your business.
 
Those steps should be taken at the strategic level:
  • Vision
  • Mission
  • Values/Culture
  • Communication
  • Overall Goals
  • Etc.
Those steps should also be taken at the operational/tactical level:
  • Dept. Goals
  • Individual Goals
  • Role Descriptions
  • Performance Reviews
  • Etc.
Those steps should also be taken at the business-function level:
  • Marketing
  • Sales
  • Purchasing
  • Etc.

The Thinking Behind the Sales Tweet
Ernest Seller tells anyone who will listen - a good sales person can read upside down. A good sales person can sit across the desk from the Client and read pretty much every document on the Client’s desk. Ernest mastered this skill as a young man. His first major coup happened about 20 years ago at the office of Mr. Kaye, Ernest’s best Client. During a meeting, Mr. Kaye stepped out of his office, leaving Ernest alone. In no time at all, Ernest had found and memorized the supplier list Mr. Kaye had been inattentive enough to leave right there on his desk. Ernest rushed back to his office to share his coup with his office mates. “What a leg up on the competition!” Little did Ernest know, nor did Mr. Kaye or his office mates ever tell him, Mr. Kaye had faked the document.
